Thorfinn's return is still not in sight Image: Wit Studio/Sentai Filmworks Vinland Saga is one of the most critically acclaimed manga series of all time. Author Makoto Yukimura carefully brought to life a somber reflection on war and violence through the cast of compelling characters who populate this historical drama. Vinland Saga was adapted into an anime by Wit Studio in 2019. A second season, produced by MAPPA, aired in 2023. Since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a continuation, but a sad update was just shared by Yukimura himself. Replying to a post by a fan on X, asking about the third season of Vinland Saga, Yukimura wrote: "Sorry my friend, I have no good news about that. The project is not currently in progress." Neither Kodansha, who publishes the Vinland Saga manga, nor MAPPA has made any official statements about the anime's third season. The story is set between Iceland and England in the 11th Century AD. The protagonist, Thorfinn, sees his father killed by the ambitious leader of a band of Vikings, Askeladd. Despite his father's pacifist teachings, Thorfinn joins Askeladd's gang to wait for an opportunity for revenge. He grows into a cruel, ruthless raider who has no qualms about killing and pillaging. Meanwhile, his relationship with Askeladd twists into something more akin to mentorship. However, Thorfinn sees revenge slip away when Askeladd is killed during a plot to assassinate the Dane king of England. Realizing that there was no point in becoming a murderer, Thorfinn loses every purpose and motivation, and resigns himself to live as a slave on a farm in Denmark, owned by a kind master called Ketil. After meeting and befriending another slave, Thorfinn begins to face his past and, after much painful soul-searching, decides to become a pacifist like his father. However, the Viking world is cruel, and Thorfinn's conviction is soon put to the test when King Canute decides to take over Ketil's farm. Image: MAPPA/Crunchyroll The anime's second season ended with Thorfinn finding himself and steeling his resolve. He decides to search for the legendary country called Vinland, where he and his friends can live free from the specter of war. Unfortunately, it's unclear when or if fans will get a chance to witness the rest of Thorfinn's journey. Vinland Saga is handled by a production committee, a common practice in the anime business which sees several companies pool their resources to produce a series. However, this often leads to delays and creative disputes. MAPPA recently started to break free from this model by fully producing its anime in-house, as it did with Chainsaw Man, thanks to a partenrship with Netflix. But sadly, this isn't the case for Vinland Saga, whose production committee includes Twin Engine, Kodansha, Production I.G., and MAPPA. Manga and anime are known for their emotional storytelling, but Vinland Saga stands out for its delicate yet powerful handling of themes like war, violence, regret, and grief. It's a gripping historical drama that teaches meaningful lessons about humanity, and it's a shame that there is still no third season in sight.
