JOTHI RAMALINGAM Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday (September 3, 2026) announced in the Assembly the formation of two new police districts in Poonamallee and Kilambakkam to ensure the maintenance of law and order in these rapidly developing areas.According to the announcement, the Avadi Police District will be bifurcated to create the Poonamallee police district, and the Poonamallee police sub-division will be bifurcated to constitute the Thirumazhisai police sub-division. Mr. Vijay said this was being done as the rapid urbanisation and population growth in areas under the Avadi Commissionerate required continuous monitoring of public safety and law and order.Similarly, following the opening of the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus, the surrounding area is growing rapidly, necessitating increased focus on law and order, public safety, and traffic control. Consequently, law and order police districts and sub-divisions under the Tambaram Police Commissionerate will be reorganised to create the Kilambakkam police district. The Guduvanchery sub-division will be bifurcated to form the new Kilambakkam police sub-division.Mr. Vijay also said conservancy services for the Police Department would be outsourced to ensure proper hygiene and maintain clean working environments for the personnel. This initiative would get an allocation of ₹60 crore per year.He announced that women firefighters would be recruited into the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS). The move aims to empower women and provide them equal opportunities on the frontline — particularly for specialised rescues involving women and children. He also announced that to ensure equal opportunities for all genders, the designation of “fireman” would be officially renamed as “firefighter.”New fire stations will be established in six locations: Porur (Chennai), Sengipatti (Thanjavur), Ayothiyapattinam (Salem), Ponerikarai (Kancheepuram), Thirupuvanam (Sivaganga), and Vadamadurai (Dindigul) at a total cost of ₹16 crore. New buildings will be built at the cost of ₹65.90 crore for 15 fire stations, including ones in J.J. Nagar, Maduravoyal, and Koyambedu, which currently operate on rented premises.Uniform allowances for TNFRS personnel, ranging from firefighters to officers up to the rank of Additional Director, will be brought on a par with the Police Department personnel at a cost of ₹3.77 crore. The number of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Fire Service Medals awarded to personnel on Pongal Day will be doubled from 120 to 240. Further, the associated cash stipend per recipient would be increased from ₹400 to ₹500. Published - September 03, 2026 08:51 pm IST
