The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched a competition offering up to $215 million in planned funding to accelerate the development of fault-tolerant quantum computers capable of tackling scientific problems beyond the practical reach of conventional computing. The Quantum Genesis Q Competition is seeking proposals from private-sector companies to build and deploy scientifically relevant quantum computers with at least 100 logical qubits capable of performing hundreds of millions of fault-tolerant operations. The agency announced the initiative on September 17. From fragile qubits to useful quantum computers Today’s quantum computers are built from physical qubits that are highly susceptible to errors caused by noise and imperfections. Fault-tolerant quantum computing aims to overcome this problem by encoding information across multiple physical qubits to create more reliable logical qubits, along with error-correction techniques that allow calculations to continue despite individual errors. That distinction makes the DOE’s target significant. Rather than simply counting the number of physical qubits in a machine, the competition focuses on systems capable of demonstrating useful computation with at least 100 logical qubits. The DOE says the systems should be capable of hundreds of millions of fault-tolerant operations and demonstrate applications in areas including chemistry, materials science, physics, and applied mathematics. The goal builds on the DOE’s broader Quantum Genesis initiative, announced in June with a target of developing and deploying a scientifically relevant, fault-tolerant quantum computing capability by 2028. $200 million in performance incentives The competition is divided into two phases. Phase I will provide fixed awards of up to $1.5 million per awardee for early development milestones. Phase II introduces a much larger performance-based incentive structure. A $100 million pool will be divided among participants that demonstrate a first-generation scientifically relevant quantum computer with at least 100 logical qubits. Two additional $50 million pools are available as bonuses for systems demonstrating 150 and 200 logical qubits, respectively. According to the agency, the total planned funding is up to $215 million, including $2.5 million in fiscal 2026 funding. Future-year funding is contingent on congressional appropriations. Applications are open to private-sector companies, with final submissions due October 19, 2026. The DOE will hold an informational webinar for prospective applicants on September 25. National labs will build the testing infrastructure The department is also establishing a separate $45 million Quantum High-Performance Computing Validation and Verification Testbed Lab Call for its National Laboratories. The testbed is intended to provide the tools needed to independently characterize and validate different parts of a quantum computing system, ranging from physical hardware and quantum gates to logical architectures, algorithms, and classical control systems. It says this infrastructure will support the Q Competition while helping connect quantum computing with the department’s existing high-performance computing capabilities. The lab call also includes $14 million in fiscal 2026 funding. The Quantum Genesis Mission seeks to combine advanced computing, AI, and quantum technologies to accelerate scientific discovery. DOE’s earlier Quantum Genesis announcement described the eventual goal as integrating quantum systems with the department’s existing exascale and future post-exascale computing infrastructure.The immediate challenge, however, is demonstrating that a fault-tolerant system can move beyond laboratory benchmarks and perform large numbers of reliable operations on problems that matter to scientists.
