United sells cash upgrades as nonrefundable. Change your own plans and you can lose the upgrade payment, even when you get a credit for the value of the ticket itself. But several United customers report getting that money back by asking United for a refund or, failing that, a travel credit. The useful request: can you preserve the value of my unused paid upgrade? The answer back is often more accommodating than the warning they saw when buying it. In an August 2025 report, a passenger had booked an international award with a domestic connection at Newark. The long haul was already in business class. They paid separately to upgrade the connecting flight. Then work required leaving earlier. They found another award, wrote United explaining the change, and asked for the upgrade money back so they could buy an upgrade on the replacement flight. United approved the refund within 24 hours, telling them it would process within seven days. A commenter in the same discussion reported doing this repeatedly: I’ve changed at least six flights with confirmed, paid upgrades this year. I simply called United and asked for the upgrade to be transferred to a United credit and I’ve never had a problem. In January 2025, a traveler whose company canceled a trip said United immediately refunded the upgrade they’d purchased personally. And in a May 2026 discussion, another reported consistently receiving electronic travel certificates for paid upgrades after changing dates or canceling reservations. Ask about the upgrade charge. Have the reservation and upgrade receipt handy. Request a refund for the unused upgrade. If cash isn’t available, ask for an electronic travel certificate. The request is to keep the value, even if United won’t return the payment to your card. A phone refusal just means ask again. One traveler got $439 back through a written refund request after being turned down over the phone. You can submit a request through United’s refund page. One passenger reported losing a $700 upgrade after postponing a trip, despite calling the 1K desk. I wouldn’t buy an upgrade assuming a refund is assured, the way that it is with American.
