Ukrainian War Documentary ‘Brace For Oblivion’ Wins in Ireland, Comes to Kyiv

An American filmmaker’s nearly four-year journey alongside Ukrainian soldiers has resulted in an award-winning documentary that is now coming back to Ukraine. “Brace For Oblivion”, directed and produced by Xackery Irving, won the Best International Documentary Award at the Galway Film Fleadh in Ireland. Trailer: Four years, seven Ukrainians, one warIrving began filming in Ukraine shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, following Ukrainian volunteers as they left civilian life to defend their country.Over nearly four years, he filmed with them in Kherson, Bakhmut, Andriivka, Vovchansk and other areas along the front, including zero-line combat zones.The result is an immersive portrait of seven ordinary people whose lives were transformed by the war.Rather than offering another overview of the conflict, “Brace For Oblivion” focuses on its intimate consequences: what prolonged combat does to the body, mind and soul, and what it takes to return to ordinary life after experiencing war.The camera follows the servicemembers through the extreme intensity of open-ended combat and back into the everyday world they are fighting to protect.
