UK Pledges £10 Billion ($13.3 Billion) to Ukraine, Including Urgent Air Defense Aid

Britain has announced more than £10 billion ($13.3 billion) in additional financial and military support for Ukraine, including emergency funding for air defenses ahead of winter, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Wednesday, Oct. 28. The package includes £7 billion ($9.3 billion) in economic support over three years and an additional £3 billion ($4 billion) in British export-finance capacity, primarily intended to support military equipment deliveries.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official. The UK government also announced £500 million ($665 million) in additional military assistance to address urgent gaps in Ukraine’s air defenses this winter. “I had a great conversation with the UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and we are grateful to Britain for its unwavering, strong, and truly leading support,” Zelensky wrote on social media following their conversation. The Ukrainian leader described the announcement as a timely signal to Moscow that Kyiv would continue receiving international backing. “A truly strong and very timely step – coming right as Russia needs to see and feel that Ukraine will not be left alone,” Zelensky said. According to the British government’s official statement, Burnham and Chancellor John Healey spoke with Zelensky ahead of a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. Downing Street described the new commitment as Britain’s largest financial support package for Ukraine. The £7 billion economic component includes up to £5.5 billion in World Bank guarantees and a £500 million contribution to a World Bank crisis facility intended to mobilize additional assistance. Separately, the £3 billion expansion in UK Export Finance capacity will prioritize defense-related exports, raising Britain’s total export-finance coverage for Ukraine to £6.5 billion. The new commitments come on top of Britain’s existing annual military assistance and previously pledged economic support. London said the additional £500 million for air defenses would help address urgent shortfalls as Ukraine prepares for another winter of Russian attacks. Zelensky said continued international support was essential to convincing Moscow that prolonging the war would not weaken Ukraine’s position. “Every step to strengthen Ukraine brings Russia closer to realizing that it must end this war of its own making,” he said.
