Recent, buzzy additions to NBC's Line of Fire have officially made the new family-focused crime drama star-studded. In an exciting return to network TV, episode 5, "Cul-de-Sac," introduced Sam Waterston as former President Barnes. The episode also featured an appearance from Teen Wolf alum Tyler Posey in a mysterious, charismatic role that promised further development. Sure enough, episode 6, "Cabin Pressure," further explored the fact that Posey's Brandon Hayes is not only an NSA agent, but a longtime friend of Russ Hollingsworth, with whom he served in the Marines. Even in his brief screen time in "Cul-de-Sac," Brandon immediately established his charm, landing into an easy rapport with the stiffest member of Line of Fire's Hollingsworth family. The NBC series has already set itself apart by blending serialized and procedural plotlines, a unique format in the network TV world. On top of that, Line of Fire depicts the inner workings of not one but four government agencies, and does it all from the focal point of a family drama. Impressively, Posey's Brandon is poised to be at the heart of every facet of the show's layered storytelling. The character has already helped the Hollingsworths with their more urgent work, while lingering scenes and meaningful subtext promise a longer overarching story. With his history with Russ and clear substance to their dynamic, Line of Fire even seems to be implying a spark between the two characters, placing Brandon at the heart of the show's character-driven stories as well. A Russ And Brandon Romance Would Be A Welcome Story For Line Of Fire Photo by: Matt Infante/NBC Line of Fire hasn't yet introduced any queer storylines, and while Russ is arguably the most obvious contender for one, Brandon has already brought out a new side of him that promises to make his character more interesting, rather than stereotypical. Compared to Micah, the show's classic heartthrob with his dangerous job and exciting, scandalous secret relationship, Russ is characterized as being notably less traditionally masculine. With mild manners, a meticulously organized life, and a girlfriend that he seems inexplicably hesitant to commit to, a revelation relating to Russ' sexuality wouldn't exactly come as a shock. Yet there is genuine chemistry between Russ and Brandon, and the pairing has actually brought out a yet-unseen level of masculinity in Russ' character. While Mike, Jane, Micah, and Clare are often seen in the field, heroically putting themselves in harm's way, Russ' work with the DOJ largely places him, ironically, out of the line of fire. That changed in "Cabin Pressure," when Brandon and Russ took it upon themselves to investigate the home of the suspicious Marshal who was with Jane on her sabotaged flight. The scene revealed Russ' training and confidence in the field. This, combined with his rapport with Brandon, made his military background not only interesting, but believable. Russ and Brandon have a rather "bro-y" dynamic, complete with fist bumps, that Russ hasn't yet been shown to have with his family, coworkers, or seldom-seen girlfriend. Yet there also undoubtedly seems to be something more to their friendship. Even in moments that look, on the surface, simple and platonic, like Brandon and Russ reconnecting or making dinner plans, the scenes seem to linger just a little longer than necessary and carry a sense of charged tension. Brandon and Russ' story in "Cabin Pressure" ended with the two making plans to "hang" and "talk about the bad old days in Kabul," yet when Brandon added that he would "bring his girl," Russ seemed momentarily caught off guard. Their dinner plans were emphasized again in a text exchange before the episode's end, foreshadowing that the upcoming plans will be more than just dinner among friends. Given how their dynamic has already expanded and elevated Russ' character, a romance between him and Brandon would be a welcome source of conflict, drama, and character exploration. An interpersonal connection to Russ' seemingly storied past would help center his character, who has so far largely been seen as the person others call for help. A new spark for Russ would also complicate his relationship with Natasha, a storyline that has been mostly dormant in recent episodes. Romance Plays A Surprisingly Big Role In Line Of Fire Image via Everett Collection With its interweaving government plot lines, ongoing mystery with the long-lost Jack (Charlie Barnett), and drama within the Hollingsworth family, Line of Fire has a lot going on. Yet amidst all of that, the show has found ample opportunity for romance. In fact, almost every member of the Hollingsworth family has already had more than one romantic storyline. After throwing herself into her work as a way of coping with the death and possible betrayal of her boyfriend Logan, "Cabin Pressure" saw Clare ask out her fellow agent Raul. Mike and Jane are still in the throes of a complicated affair within their own marriage while also pursuing other relationships. Micah and Frist Daughter Sydney are in a secret yet seemingly committed relationship, while Russ has inexplicably tried to keep his girlfriend Natasha similarly under wraps. With all of the romance Line of Fire has at play, another love interest for Russ wouldn't be at all out of the question.
