Amalraj based on recommendations from the Entrustment Document Fraud (EDF) Prevention Wing of the Central Crime Branch. The immediate cause for the action stems from a complaint filed by Manivannan, a businessman residing in Anna Nagar. Manivannan alleged that the main accused, who goes by multiple aliases including Muthuvel, “Lion” Muthuvel, B.M. Chettiyar, and Muthukrishna, of Villivakkam, and an associate, Gurubaran alias Jagan, cheated him. The suspects had allegedly promised to secure a loan of ₹50 crore for him at a low interest rate. The police said they obtained an advance payment of ₹2 crore, signed blank cheques, and papers from the victim and subsequently threatened him while demanding more funds. The suspects, who had been on the run, were arrested by a police team at Ongole in Andhra Pradesh on October 20. Following their arrest, they were brought to Chennai, presented before a court, and remanded in judicial custody.Subsequent investigations revealed the suspects had multiple cases pending against them across various police stations for allegedly cheating various people of over ₹100 crore. Citing their repeated involvement in serious financial offenses, authorities deemed it necessary to detain both individuals under the Goondas Act. They are currently lodged in the Puzhal Central Prison. Published - November 03, 2026 07:08 pm IST
