(Image credit: Shutterstock) I'm a huge fan of audiobooks, and now that I've been testing Ray-Ban Meta's audio-only glasses, I'm finding even more opportunities to listen instead of read.So when I came across a new tool called PDF to MP3, I was intrigued. It turns PDFs, reports and eBooks into narrated audio, making it easier to get through reading material while doing something else. It also connects with AI assistants, including OpenAI's Codex, so you can turn documents into something you can listen to on the go.So if you're already paying for ChatGPT, why not put that subscription to work converting the documents you've been meaning to read? But there's an important catch. While your existing subscription can handle part of the process, generating the actual audio requires a separate API key and may cost extra. If you're up for the challenge like I was, I can guarantee it's worth it.How PDF to MP3 works How to create an audiobook II - YouTube Watch On PDF to MP3 uses AI to process documents and text-to-speech technology to produce narrated audio.According to site, the workflow has two specific parts. Your existing OpenAI or Codex subscription can handle document processing through an MCP connection, while an OpenAI or Google Gemini API generates the spoken narration. To be clear, you're not just uploading a PDF into ChatGPT and receiving a finished audiobook for free (that would be too easy, although I have created a workaround before).Instead, the service connects different AI tools to handle the conversion process. The developer also offers examples of generated audio so potential users can hear the results before setting up the service. It's not Audible quality, but it's also not terrible. The finished audio can be played through the service's listening interface, and the developer has demonstrated how the workflow can extend from uploading a PDF to listening on a phone or in a car.Sign up to the Tom's AI Guide weekly newsletter summing up all the biggest AI news you need to know. Connect a supported assistant, such as Codex, using the service's MCP integration and authentication process.Provide a document you want converted into audio. This could be anything from an ebook file to a research PDF. From there, configure a supported text-to-speech provider, such as OpenAI or Gemini. Note: this requires separate API access.Follow the service's workflow to generate the narration, then open the resulting audio in its player. The service is designed to handle the process from document preparation to listening, rather than requiring users to manually extract text, generate speech and assemble audio files. If you are even the slightest tech savvy, you'll be able to handle it. The whole process took me about 20 minutes, but I was also taking notes for this feature, so it will probably be even faster for you. What about privacy? (Image credit: Future)API keys can authorize billable requests, so exposing one to an untrusted service creates a potential financial and security risk. Before using PDF to MP3, review how it handles credentials, whether it stores uploaded documents and what access you're granting.Of course, avoid uploading sensitive documents until you've established how the service processes and retains them. It's also worth remembering that an AI-generated audiobook may not reproduce every element of a PDF perfectly. Tables, diagrams, unusual formatting and complicated names can all present challenges for automated narration.Keep in mind, your ChatGPT subscription doesn't cover everything, which is where things get a little complicated. On theThe developer clarified on the site that the subscription covers document processing, while generating speech requires a separate API key from OpenAI or Gemini. That's important since ChatGPT subscriptions and OpenAI API usage are billed separately.Even if you're paying for ChatGPT Plus or Pro, that doesn't automatically mean you have free access to OpenAI's text-to-speech API. You'll need to account for any additional charges associated with the narration.Verdict: I think it's worth trying I think the idea behind PDF to MP3 is useful, even if the setup isn't quite as simple as just uploading a document into ChatGPT. The project may still be useful, particularly if you regularly convert documents into audio. But it's not an entirely free audiobook generator simply because you already subscribe to ChatGPT.Being able to turn a lengthy document into something you can listen to during a commute, while exercising or around the house could make information that's been sitting unread far more accessible. And the ability to use an existing AI subscription for part of that workflow feels like a win. Just know before you try it that the additional API requirements make this a better fit for people comfortable connecting AI services than for someone looking for a one-click audiobook converter. The bigger takeaway here is that AI is becoming even more practical to turn written material into audio.Follow Tom's Guide on Google News and add us as a preferred source to get our up-to-date news, analysis, and reviews in your feeds.
