Turkey’s defense industry has demonstrated another step forward in precision air-to-ground warfare with the successful live-fire testing of ASELSAN’s TOLUN deep-strike munition family from a Bayraktar AKINCI unmanned combat aerial vehicle.The trials, conducted on 1 September 2026 at the Konya Karapınar Firing Test Range, brought together military officials from more than 15 countries and showcased all three current TOLUN variants—TOLUN I, TOLUN F and TOLUN P. According to ASELSAN, each weapon successfully completed its planned engagement profile and struck its designated target. Successful release of the weapons The significance of the demonstration lies not simply in the successful release of the weapons, but in the different effects that the three TOLUN variants are designed to deliver.TOLUN I is configured with an impact fuze and fragmentation warhead. During the trial, it scored a direct hit on a container, demonstrating its ability to deliver a fragmentation effect immediately upon impact.TOLUN F takes a different approach. It was employed against an armoured personnel carrier using a proximity sensor and fragmentation warhead. Its selectable impact angle and software designed to resist GPS spoofing are intended to provide greater flexibility against personnel and other targets in the vicinity of the engagement point. TOLUN P penetrated a two-storey concrete structure The most specialized demonstration involved TOLUN P. This variant penetrated a two-storey concrete structure before neutralizing designated elements at the selected level. It combines a penetrating warhead with a programmable time-delay fuze and ASELSAN’s ASAF-Hard Target Fuze, giving it a role against reinforced and hardened structures.The three configurations illustrate a broader trend in modern precision weapons: the ability to tailor the weapon effect to the target rather than relying on a single warhead design.Within the TOLUN family, operators can select between fragmentation, proximity-effect and penetrating capabilities. This potentially allows the same aircraft platform to undertake different types of strike missions while carrying weapons configured for different target characteristics.Such flexibility is particularly relevant in complex battlefield environments, where targets may range from exposed personnel and lightly protected vehicles to armoured platforms and reinforced buildings.The integration of TOLUN with the Bayraktar AKINCI further highlights the evolution of unmanned aircraft from surveillance platforms into sophisticated strike systems.The AKINCI can carry multiple precision weapons, allowing an operator to engage more than one target during a sortie. ASELSAN’s SADAK-4T Multiple Ejector Rack is designed to carry several TOLUN munitions simultaneously, increasing the number of weapons that can be deployed during a single mission.This combination of an unmanned aircraft, precision guidance and specialised warheads offers a potentially scalable approach to deep-strike operations. Instead of employing different aircraft for different target classes, a single platform can potentially carry a mixture of weapons suited to the mission.Precision Strike in a More Contested EnvironmentAnother notable element of the demonstration is the emphasis on operating in difficult electronic and environmental conditions.ASELSAN states that the TOLUN family is designed for day-and-night operations and varying weather conditions. The TOLUN F demonstration also highlighted resistance to GPS spoofing, an increasingly important consideration as electronic warfare becomes a central component of modern military operations. TOLUN I provides an impact-triggered fragmentation capability, TOLUN F adds proximity-based effects against targets such as armoured personnel carriers, while TOLUN P is designed to defeat reinforced structures through penetration and delayed detonation.Combined with the Bayraktar AKINCI and the SADAK-4T multiple-ejector system, the family points toward a flexible strike architecture in which one unmanned aircraft can potentially carry several types of precision weapons and attack different targets during the same mission.The recent demonstration at Konya Karapınar therefore represents more than another weapons test. It highlights the growing sophistication of Turkey’s indigenous precision-strike ecosystem—and the increasing role of unmanned platforms in delivering specialised effects against targets ranging from vehicles to hardened structures.
