Trump Says He Is Banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico From White House Press P0ol

President Donald Trump announced Friday that he is banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House “effective immediately,” accusing the three outlets of reporting “fake news” about him and his administration. “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The president did not specify whether the ban would revoke reporters’ credentials or exclude the outlets from briefings, presidential events and the White House press pool. Representatives for the White House, CNN, MS NOW and Politico did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s requests for comment. In his post, Trump falsely claimed that MSNBC changed its name to MS NOW “due to lack of viewership and credibility.” The cable network rebranded in November 2025 because it was separating from NBCUniversal as part of Comcast’s spinoff of Versant and could no longer use NBC’s name and peacock logo. Trump also revived his claim that Politico received an “illegal” $8 million government subscription under former President Joe Biden to keep the publication operating. Federal agencies purchased subscriptions to Politico Pro, the outlet’s premium policy-intelligence service, during both Democratic and Republican administrations. There has been no evidence that the payments were intended as government funding for Politico’s newsroom. The announcement escalates Trump’s yearslong campaign to restrict access for news organizations whose coverage he dislikes. During his first term, the White House excluded CNN, Politico, The New York Times and several other outlets from an informal press briefing in 2017 and temporarily revoked CNN correspondent Jim Acosta’s press credentials the following year. In 2025, the Trump White House restricted The Associated Press’ access to certain presidential events after the news organization continued referring to the Gulf of Mexico by its internationally recognized name rather than Trump’s preferred “Gulf of America.” The AP sued, arguing that the government could not punish a news organization for its editorial choices. That legal fight remains unresolved. Trump’s latest move also comes one day after Disney asked a federal judge to block the Federal Communications Commission from conducting early reviews of eight ABC television-station licenses.
