US President Donald Trump has called this year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner Navi Pillay a “mystery person” and lamented the Nobel committee’s decision not to award him the prize, calling it “disgraceful and embarrassing”. During a campaign rally in Syracuse, New York, Trump said: “I never heard of the person. Nobody did.” Trump lashed out at Norway hours after the committee awarded this year’s prize to Pillay, a former International Criminal Court judge who led a UN enquiry that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Trump has expressed disappointment at not winning the prize every year of his presidency. “This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision,” he said. He listed several conflicts he claimed a role in resolving and said he had helped prevent wars between North and South Korea, Japan and North Korea, and China and Taiwan, without providing evidence. “The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilisation. And we will not forget, Norway,” he said.
