US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 33%, its lowest level in CNN polling across either of his presidential terms, as Americans express growing dissatisfaction with the economy ahead of November’s midterm elections. The CNN survey, conducted by SSRS, found 67% disapprove of Trump’s job performance, including 51% who strongly disapprove. Just 27% approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, while only 20% approve of his handling of inflation. The economic numbers mark a sharp change from the same stage of Trump’s first presidency. His approval on the economy stood 22 percentage points higher in September 2018, while 69% of Americans then described economic conditions as good. In the latest poll, that figure has fallen to 28%. The survey also found Trump is playing a significant role in how voters view the Nov. 3 congressional elections. Among registered voters, 49% said they would support the Democratic candidate in their district and 41% the Republican candidate. Among voters describing themselves as the most motivated to participate, the gap measured 20 percentage points. Meanwhile, 44% said their midterm vote would be intended to express opposition to Trump, compared with 19% who said their vote would express support for him. Another 37% said their vote was not intended to send a message about the president. The poll was conducted by SSRS for CNN on Sept. 16-17 among a nationally representative sample of 1,206 US adults using online and telephone interviews.
