Troubled Fate/Extra Record Remake Switches Developer As Original Studio Director Resigns

Work on an anticipated remake of the PSP’s Fate/Extra Record RPG for modern consoles might be back on track under the guidance of a new development team and publisher after the previous studio, Type Moon Studio BB, announced plans to vacate the project and undergo an extensive restructuring, including the departure of its director, following a turbulent development. Work on the title has been notoriously difficult, with most news surrounding the game since its 2020 announcement in 2020 consisting of extensive delays. It was originally supposed to ship in 2024, but earlier this year it was delayed indefinitely after its original publisher, Bandai Namco Entertainment, withdrew its support, forcing the cancellation of all Japanese pre-orders for the cult-favorite. This week, it was revealed that Aniplex will take Bandai’s place, with Famitsu reporting that development on the game has also been shifted from Type Moon Studio BB to Meteorise, the team behind the 2025 anime fighting game Bleach: Rebirth of Souls. Though visual novel fans will already be very familiar with the dark fantasy work of Fate/Stay Night, the project is also noteworthy for its many adaptations and spinoffs in the form of anime, video games, and manga, transforming its hobbyist development team at Type Moon into a media conglomerate. Among these many spin-offs was Fate/Extra, a 2010 PSP dungeon crawler that earned positive reviews upon its release. In 2019, Type Moon opened Type Moon Studio BB, a dedicated game development subsidiary led by former Square Enix and Atlus director Kazuya Nino, known for his work on titles like Trauma Center and Dragon Quest Builders, with a remake of the beloved title as their first project. This week’s news of a new publisher and developer for the title coincided with news of a major restructuring of the company to mitigate the issues facing the studio moving forward, including the departure of Kazuya Nino as the studio director. In a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account picked up by HDKirin on Bluesky, Kazuya Nino confirmed he had left the studio, citing personal reasons, adding, “I have made the decision to leave Type Moon Studio BB, as well as my role as director on Fate/Extra Record, with immediate effect. In order to take responsibility for the current situation, I have also requested that my name be removed from the game’s credits. I deeply apologize for being unable to fulfill my duties as director until completion, and to any fans who are looking forward to the game’s release.” — 新納一哉 (@Nino_Kazuya) August 31, 2026 He also expressed his respect for the remaining development team, and though he will not publicly comment on the game moving forward, he assures fans the remaining development following this restructuring and planned changes will meet audience expectations. The nature of the game’s turbulent development leading to the public acknowledgment of these issues is a rarity in the Japanese games industry. Whether this means an end to the documented issues this title has faced remains to be seen. Old social media accounts and the official website for the game will also be closed down on September 7th, with new information on the updated state of the game set to be revealed next month.
