Though it's been one of the biggest questions about the future of the franchise since Boston Blue's debut, Tom Selleck's return to the world of Blue Bloods may not be as far off as it once seemed. After 14 seasons on the air, Blue Bloods came to a close at the end of 2024 despite the cast having hoped for more of the CBS series. Selleck, the veteran actor who played family patriarch and NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan throughout the show's run, was open about the fact that the show's end didn't sit well with him, especially after the announcement that the franchise would continue with Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan relocating to Boston for a spinoff series. While keeping the Blue Bloods franchise alive with Boston Blue has been of interest to fans of the original series, moving from the family-focused original series to the more streamlined spinoff has been a major shift. Despite any reservations, several of the original cast members who portrayed key members of the Reagan family have made appearances in Boston Blue season 1, including Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan, Len Cariou as Henry Reagan, and Will Hochman as Joe Hill. With Marisa Ramirez recurring throughout Boston Blue's first season as Maria Baez and continuing during the second, Selleck has been a noticeably absent holdout. Though Selleck has shared that there have been some sour feelings about the way that Blue Bloods came to a close, it appears that Boston Blue's co-showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier have an invested interest in making a Frank Reagan appearance on the spinoff a narratively rich reality. Boston Blue Is Actively Finding The Perfect Story For Frank's Return Image via MovieStillsDB While Selleck has been upfront about the fact that his feelings were hurt by the way Blue Bloods came to an end, which has seemingly limited his interest in taking part in Boston Blue, there's been a development on the production side of the story that feels promising. Ahead of Boston Blue season 2, the show's co-showrunners revealed that they're continuing to search out the right story to make sure that Frank's potential appearance on the series feels like a natural fit. While both shared that getting the opportunity to write for Selleck, the legend that he is, would be a dream, they shared that having the right story was tantamount. One of the major issues in seeing Blue Bloods cast members appear on Boston Blue has been finding the right story to bring them into the new world of the franchise. While having Danny in Boston is, at times, more than enough of a reason for one of the Reagan or Reagan-adjacent characters to visit, it doesn't always feel like a necessary piece of the larger series puzzle. In ensuring that Frank's journey to the world of Boston Blue has a rich narrative payoff, the creative team is working to make his appearance well worth the wait. The series wouldn't be bringing Frank into the picture for purely nostalgic reasons, which is a great step forward. Having a meaningful story arc for Frank would be a great way to convince Selleck to step back into the role, as well. While the spinoff has already demonstrated that it can bring the original Blue Bloods characters into the mix, Frank is a particularly large presence that requires the utmost care if he's to appear in the spinoff. Why Frank Is The Trickiest Reagan To Bring To Boston Blue MovieStillsDB Incorporating Blue Bloods characters into the new world of Boston Blue has been one of the most consistent parts of the spinoff, but Frank is the trickiest of the Reagan family members to bake into a new space for a few reasons. First and foremost, Selleck's personal issues with the way the CBS series was cancelled make it clear that convincing him to return may take more than a simple ask. Even so, Frank as a character is somewhat more of a fickle issue than the other Reagan family members who have appeared on Boston Blue thus far. Blue Bloods was a series that was so intrinsically New York focused that the city felt like a character, rather than the setting of the series. As the NYPD Commissioner, Frank was the beating heart of New York, and his pride for his city made it clear that there was usually no place he'd rather be. While traveling outside of New York doesn't seem like an impossible feat, especially for a man with children and grandchildren who haven't stayed bound to the city, plucking the character out of his setting may set things more awry than it would seem. Frank's character, without the right story attached, may feel flimsier than anticipated without the support of the city setting. Ultimately, Frank's appearance on Boston Blue should be important enough to justify bringing Selleck back, but it should not undermine the premise that Danny is building a life away from New York. That makes figuring out the best way to bring him back into the franchise fold that much trickier, as the stakes are far higher than they've been with other characters. When Selleck's Frank Might Return In Boston Blue (& How) While there isn't any timeline for Frank's potential appearance on Boston Blue, it's possible that it could happen by the end of the show's second season. Despite there being no timeline for the heavily-anticipated guest appearance, Frank coming into Danny's world could provide a fantastic look at the father/son relationship in a whole new way. Throughout Blue Bloods' run, viewers saw Frank as a specific type of father figure, and while the pair were close, knowing that Danny has moved away to start a new life in a new city likely changed the way the pair communicate with each other. Boston Blue would likely use a larger family-centric storyline to bring Frank into the fold, and with Baez moving to Boston this season, the show could utilize some of the more personal parts of Danny's life to create a chance for a reunion. Boston Blue season 2 has previewed that Baez's adopted daughter, Elena, will share a newfound relationship with Danny that creates a renewed family dynamic in the upcoming season. While Danny's parented young children before, this is a completely different situation than before, and with new dynamics may come moments where he needs his father's advice or wisdom. Frank could come in as a part of Danny's more personal story on Boston Blue as he adapts to a different type of parenthood, which could make a transition into some sort of professional help from the NYPD Commissioner an even more exciting possibility. Whether Fank's return is a personal endeavor, a professional call, or a mixture of the two, bringing the Blue Bloods character back to life will be one of the most important moments of Boston Blue's run.
