Published Oct 7, 2026, 5:10 PM EDT EXCLUSIVE: The Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue has already featured multiple cast members from the original series, and now the showrunners are addressing whether Tom Selleck will stop by anytime soon. Selleck starred on Blue Bloods as Frank Reagan for all 14 seasons of the CBS procedural. The series centered on the Reagans, a law enforcement family headed by patriarch Frank. After Blue Bloods ended, the network ordered a spinoff about Donnie Wahlberg's character, with Danny Reagan moving to Boston and starting a new job at the Boston Police Department. Boston Blue is about to launch its second season on October 9, and in an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, creators and showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier gave some insight into what it would take to get Selleck to reprise Frank Reagan. Margolis acknowledged that he and his team would "love" to have the actor make an appearance on Boston Blue, but the "right story" would need to present itself for that to happen. "It's a long, never-ending conversation," he added, especially since Selleck is really busy. Brandon Margolis: "It remains wish fulfillment on our part. We would love to have Tom, and to get to write for Tom would be a dream come true. Obviously, it's always going to come down to what's the right story to tell, and does it make sense to have Frank there for the character? It's a long, never-ending conversation, let's put it that way. Because as much as we love Tom, we know how busy he is. It would just be a dream come true. So we're always trying to think of ways to make that story possible." Sonnier echoed Margolis' sentiment about needing to find the right story to tell. After all, the producers and writers don't want to bring Selleck on board in any capacity "just for the sake of doing it." Within the context of the Blue Bloods/Boston Blue world, it would need to feel natural for Frank to show up again. Sonnier seems to believe the casting is inevitable, and when it eventually happens, "it's going to be an episode of television that we can only dream to write." Brandon Sonnier: "It's got to be the right story, though. That's sort of the thing is we don't ever want to do it just for the sake of doing it. The right story that brings Frank into the world of Boston Blue will present itself, and when it does, it's going to be an episode of television that we can only dream to write." Before Blue Bloods, Selleck was best known for starring on the iconic 1980s show Magnum, P.I., which earned him an Emmy and a Golden Globe. In the years since, he played Richard Burke in several episodes of Friends, joined the cast of Las Vegas for its final season, and had the lead role in several Jesse Stone TV films. More recently, Selleck narrated the historical docuseries Out Where the West Begins. Over the summer, he signed on to guest star in a new Apple TV comedy series with Elizabeth Banks, which will be his first on-screen TV role since Blue Bloods. Bridget Moynahan, Marisa Ramirez, Len Cariou and Will Hochman have all reprised their Blue Bloods characters on the spinoff, and Will Estes will be up next during Boston Blue season 2. Wahlberg's co-stars are Sonequa Martin-Green, Ernie Hudson, Maggie Lawson, Gloria Reuben, Marcus Scribner and Mika Amonsen. In the new season, Danny and Lena Silver will investigate a new series of murders that are eerily similar to the Boston Strangler. They'll receive help from Jonah Silver, Sean Reagan and Henry Reagan as the team attempts to prevent another death. Selleck might not be joining them anytime soon, but Margolis and Sonnier are hopeful that it will happen someday. Boston Blue season 2 premieres Friday, October 9 at 10 p.m. EDT on CBS.
