Tiruchi gears up for its official food street

MOORTHY After much debate and discussion, Tiruchi is finally set to have its own food street.Work is in progress on the Race Course Road in Khajamalai on the ‘Healthy and Hygienic Food Street’ (HHFS) project under the direction of Tiruchi District Collector Pratik Tayal, the Corporation and the Food Safety Department to set up 40 food vendor carts that will serve a variety of nutritious dishes to customers.“Over 170 persons applied to our advertisement for the HHFS project. The candidates were finalised through an interview and background check for the requisite permits. We have prioritised vendors who are serving healthy options, to help the public make informed choices about their diet. We tried to vary the cuisines being offered,” M. Jegadish Chandra Bose, District Designated Officer for the Food Safety Wing, told The Hindu on Tuesday. Carts would be secured to the ground initially, but could be moved if required, he added.The Corporation is providing the infrastructure for the area earmarked for the HHFS on the Race Course Road. “Paver tiles are being laid on the site and the public toilets have been refurbished. A small seating section will be included for those who want to dine near the vending carts,” said Corporation Commissioner Veer Pratap Singh.Residents welcomed the move to establish the HHFS. “The area will benefit from better street lighting and public facilities.
