In a TikTok video, expert John Edwards urged Brits to remain vigilant as mating season approaches. “Now that we are moving into autumn and it’s starting to rain, they’ll all be coming out for mating season.” “The weather is changing – they’re going to be living for longer too,” he added. 7 ways to prevent spiders entering your home Citrus peels – spiders hate strong smells so rubbing the peel of a lemon or orange on window ledges and skirting boards can keep them out of your home. Chalk – the creepy crawlies are said to taste with their feet and don’t like walking over disagreeable or strong flavours such as chalk. Rubbing chalk into possible entry points is definitely worth a try. Hand sanitiser – the Covid staple is said to work a treat when rubbed into window ledges etc and is a tried and tested method for keeping spiders at bay. Conkers – this is another tried and tested method. Simply spread a few conkers on window ledges or near doors. Vinegar – again, the strong smell of vinegar is a natural deterrent for the invaders. Cinnamon sticks and star anise – any scent such as cinnamon spread about your home will likely deter spiders from taking the chance of entering. Wall colour – slightly off the wall this one but creepy crawlies love the colour green, but absolutely despise blue, light blue to be specific. Maybe time for a quick overhaul of all those green tones. According to a blog post on the National Museum website, spiders are most numerous in outbuildings, such as garages or sheds. “They move around at night [especially August to October] and enter living rooms through open windows and gaps around doors,” the post adds.
