The tech layoff wave is far from over. Apple, Uber, Oracle and PayPal are among the latest big names cutting jobs as they rethink spending and invest in AI and new products. The tech job market is still taking a hit. Companies are betting big on AI, restructuring teams, changing how they work and looking for ways to cut costs. And amid all these changes, human jobs are bearing the most impact. According to Layoffs.fyi, 129,488 tech employees have been laid off across 296 tech companies in 2026. In the past few weeks alone, Apple, Uber, Oracle and PayPal have been among the latest big tech names to cut jobs. So, what is driving these latest cuts, and which companies are affected? Let’s take a quick look at some of the biggest tech layoffs and workforce changes reported in recent weeks.Layoffs at Apple Last month Apple reportedly let go of more than 200 employees across teams working on Siri, Vision Pro and related software, reported Bloomberg. Around 100 positions were cut from the Vision Pro organisation, while another 100 came from Siri and software teams, including the Intelligent Systems Experience group that works on AI features across Apple's devices.Apple confirmed the restructuring but did not confirm the exact number of layoffs. The company said it was realigning teams as it works to evolve its business, while also creating new roles. The changes are playing out differently across Apple's teams. In Vision Pro, Apple has largely shut down its gaming team and reduced its immersive video operations. Siri, meanwhile, is going through a different kind of change, with Apple rebuilding the voice assistant around a new AI architecture that requires a different set of skills and expertise. Uber plans to fire 3,300 employees Uber also announced a major round of layoffs in the first week of September. The ride-hailing company plans to cut around 3,300 jobs globally, or about 10 per cent of its workforce, in its biggest round of layoffs since the Covid-19 pandemic. In an internal memo to employees, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the company is removing management layers, simplifying teams and changing its global location strategy.Uber plans to use some of the savings to invest in future technologies, including AI and autonomous vehicles.PayPal cuts jobs in India PayPal has also cut jobs in India as part of its global restructuring. The company initially faced reports that around 600 employees had been affected, but PayPal later clarified to India Today Tech that 220 employees, or about 4 per cent of its India teams, were impacted as of August 31. The company said the changes are part of a previously announced multi-year transformation aimed at simplifying global operations and supporting long-term growth.Oracle may cut more jobs Now, reports are also emerging that Oracle could be preparing for another round of job cuts. Business Insider reported that the company may reduce its workforce further, with internal estimates suggesting that between 7,000 and 10,000 roles globally could be affected. The impact on India, however, has not been independently confirmed. Employees have reportedly been told to expect possible decisions around the beginning or middle of September, although Oracle has not officially announced another round of layoffs. The potential cuts follow a major reduction already carried out by Oracle. The company reduced its global workforce by around 21,000 employees over the 12 months ending May 2026, taking its headcount to roughly 141,000. Oracle is simultaneously spending heavily on AI and cloud infrastructure, making cost control and workforce restructuring a growing priority.- EndsPublished By: Divya BhatiPublished On: Sep 7, 2026 12:31 IST
