Hit BBC gangster drama This City is Ours has been greenlit for a third season before the second has even aired. The Sean Bean-starring series kicks off Season 2 this Sunday but it appears the BBC is keen for it to become a long-running returner. AMC+ shows Season 1 in the U.S. Stephen Butchard‘s This City is Ours stars Bean and James Nelson-Joyce as Ronnie Phelan and Michael Kavanagh, a gang leader and his right-hand man in Liverpool involved in a power struggle with rival gangs. Season 2 picks up from where things left off, with Michael and Diana having barely arrived in Spain when they are dragged back into the fold to answer questions around Ricardo’s death. Joining Season 2 cast are Shaun Evans and Money Heist star Álvaro Morte. It’s no wonder the BBC is so keen on This City is Ours and has taken this rare move of ordering a third season before the second has aired. Left Bank’s show was 2025’s biggest new drama launch and the first episode was viewed by nearly 8.5 million viewers. Watch on Deadline Butchard said: “Following the quite breathtaking response to series one, myself, the cast and our wonderful crew were all determined not to drop the ball and endeavour to deliver an even better series two. No spoilers, but I’m hoping this fantastic early commission from the BBC for a third series is an indication that we may have come close to doing just that.” This City is Ours was commissioned by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, for BBC iPlayer and BBC One. The series is created by Butchard, who again serves as lead writer on series three. The third series will be executive produced by Charlotte Moore, Rebecca Hodgson and Sian McWilliams for Left Bank, Butchard, and Jo McClellan for the BBC. Sony Pictures Television distributes This City is Ours internationally.
