As anyone who’s spent time inside one can tell you, bouncy castles are supposed to be a source of joy. Unfortunately, for one large party of kids in the Republic of Ireland, their bouncy experience led them to contract a dangerous, drug-resistant bacterial infection. Irish health officials detailed the world’s worst party in a report earlier this month. Dozens of children and teens were infected by a strain of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, with nearly all cases directly linked to playing inside a bounce house. Though several children were hospitalized as a result, none died. “This was an unusual and complex community outbreak of MRSA SSTI in children and adolescents following a social event in eastern Ireland, linked to bouncy castle play,” the authors wrote in their report, published last week in the journal Eurosurveillance. Bouncy MRSA MRSA is one of the most infamous and worrisome examples of antibiotic resistance. These bacteria usually cause skin or soft tissue infections, and they can shrug off the most common drugs used to treat staph. Some strains have acquired even more resistance to the few remaining last-resort options available. Like many superbugs, MRSA cases are typically found in hospitals or other healthcare facilities, but we’re starting to see it appear more often elsewhere in the greater community. According to the report, this particular outbreak occurred sometime in the fall of 2025. The Department of Public Health for the Health Service Executive Dublin and Midlands region was alerted to the case of a 12-year-old boy who had been hospitalized with MRSA. The boy recounted that he had been to a party nine days earlier. Officials then reached out to the children and families who had attended the party. Ultimately, officials uncovered 22 confirmed and 26 probable cases of MRSA among partygoers, none of whom were adults. The children experienced various symptoms of a skin infection, including spots, pustules, redness, and blisters; some also developed a fever, nausea, and vomiting. Four children were hospitalized, though none suffered severe complications. All but one case spent time playing in the bouncy castle set up at the party, while the other remaining case had close contact with one of the latter children. Most fell sick within a day or two after the party, though one child only became ill 17 days later. An unprecedented outbreak This outbreak was noteworthy for several reasons. For starters, it’s the largest ever outbreak of community-acquired MRSA ever reported in Ireland, according to the authors, and it seems to be the first outbreak of this size ever linked to a bounce house. Officials opted not to test the bouncy castle equipment for signs of the bacteria, fearing too much time had passed to collect a viable sample. But given the proximity and timing of cases, they concluded that it was almost certainly the primary vector of transmission. It’s likely one or more people with a symptomatic infection who played in the bounce house contaminated the equipment, which then infected others, they determined. The infection’s spread was also probably aided by the warm, humid, and occasionally rainy weather that day and by the fact that many children spent hours playing inside the bouncy castle (at least 24 kids reported spending three or more hours playing). The outbreak was successfully contained through contact tracing and support of the affected cases, the officials say, which included notifying the local primary school about the need to temporarily keep infected cases at home. The company that provided the bouncy castle was also advised to not reuse their equipment again until it was adequately disinfected. Though this outbreak was corralled, it’s perhaps a sign that superbugs like MRSA are making their presence more felt in the community. And while a bounce house may not be the most obvious place to get such infections, it’s one that people should know about, the authors say. “Public health practitioners should be aware of the risk of CA-MRSA outbreaks in contexts involving prolonged, close physical contact, such as play activities and contact sport,” they wrote.
