The downsides of power saving mode It saves power, but at the cost of other stuff The power-saving mode on a Galaxy Watch looks harmless enough in the settings menu. It promises longer battery life by graying out the display, deactivating Wi-Fi and mobile networks, throttling the CPU, and limiting background activity. What isn't advertised clearly is how much that combination affects real-time notification delivery. With background processes deprioritized and the processor running at reduced speed, delivering an alert the instant it arrives isn't guaranteed the way it is in normal mode. I noticed texts landing on my watch well after I'd already read them on my phone, and calendar reminders showing up only after the meeting had started. The mode also restricts which apps get to run background processes at all, and a couple of third-party apps I use stopped pushing alerts entirely until I manually opened them on the watch, which defeats the purpose of wearing one. Fitness tracking, as it turns out, isn't affected by power-saving mode on its own — continuous heart rate monitoring and GPS accuracy are governed by a separate "Limit health features" toggle that has to be enabled independently, so anyone chasing a workout-data problem should look there instead, not at power saving mode itself. The frustrating part is how invisible the cause was. Nothing in the watch's interface warned that turning on power-saving mode would selectively delay notification delivery. It just quietly changed how the watch behaved, and I spent weeks blaming Bluetooth interference, a buggy app update, and even my phone's operating system before I isolated the actual setting. Samsung's own support documentation lists which features get disabled, but it doesn't spell out how that translates into real-world notification lag. Other battery settings that might mess things up The regular power-saving mode is not alone Power-saving mode wasn't the only setting working against me, though most of the others actually live on the phone rather than the watch itself. Digging through Settings, then Battery, then Background usage limits on my phone, I found "Put unused apps to sleep" turned on, which automatically restricts an app's background activity if I haven't opened it directly in a while. It had flagged a couple of messaging apps I check daily just because I hadn't tapped their icon in some time. That's a phone-side restriction, but since the Galaxy Wearable companion app is subject to the same rule, throttling it also slows down how promptly the phone can hand notifications off to the watch in the first place. The watch does have a couple of its own relevant toggles outside of power-saving mode. Individual apps can have auto-sync turned off, which stops them from syncing data unless opened manually, and disabling that for an app you actually rely on quietly breaks its notifications without touching power-saving mode at all. The "Limit health features" option is a separate toggle worth checking too, though it only affects things like continuous heart rate tracking rather than notification delivery. It's also worth checking the phone's battery permissions for the Galaxy Wearable app specifically, separate from the general background usage limits. If the phone's operating system decides to restrict that app's activity, the sync pipeline between phone and watch gets throttled before the watch even receives anything to relay. Mine had been quietly restricted after a software update reset some of my phone's battery permissions. None of these settings are hidden exactly, but they're scattered across the watch's own menu, the phone's background usage limits, and the Wearable app's separate permissions screen, which makes tracing an intermittent notification problem back to its source far more tedious than it should be. Power-saving mode extended my watch's runtime by roughly half a day in my own use, stretching a charge that normally lasted about a day and a half into something closer to two days. In exchange, I lost reliable, real-time notifications, which is arguably the main reason to wear a smartwatch instead of just leaving the phone in a pocket. There are less disruptive ways to get more battery life without gutting core functionality. Lowering screen brightness a notch or two barely affects visibility outdoors but measurably reduces power draw, since the display is typically the biggest battery consumer on these devices. Turning off the always-on display on its own, rather than through the blanket power-saving toggle, preserves Wi-Fi and background sync while still cutting a meaningful amount of drain. Being deliberate about which apps are allowed to sync automatically, on both the phone and the watch, rather than letting the phone's background usage limits decide for you, also avoids the delayed-notification problem without sacrificing responsiveness. Ultimately, a smartwatch that lasts an extra several hours but misses text messages and calendar alerts isn't doing its job. The battery settings marketed as convenient shortcuts often trade away the exact feature that makes the device worth wearing in the first place. I've since turned power saving mode off entirely and accepted the shorter charge cycle as the cost of a watch that actually works the way it's supposed to. A setting not worth the tradeoff The power-saving mode and its related settings quietly break Galaxy Watch notifications far more than Samsung's marketing suggests. The battery gains rarely justify the loss of the feature that makes a smartwatch useful.
