‘There’s no winner there’: Trump responds to question about Lindsay Clancy pardon

President Donald Trump weighed in on whether he plans to pardon Lindsay Clancy after her attorney Kevin Reddington publicly asked for one after the case ended in a mistrial.In responding to Reddington’s request for a pardon, Trump pointed out the charges were a “state situation, not a federal one.” The president can only pardon federal crimes.“It’s a very sad situation,” Trump said. “I certainly heard that. But look, it’s very sad. There is no winner there. There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead. I don’t know.” The president’s comments further highlight the extensive publicity this case has received, sparking concerns about whether the attorneys will be able to find an unbiased jury should the prosecutors opt to retry the case. Trump also commented on Reddington himself. “He’s a good attorney,” Trump said. “I’ve heard from other people he’s a very good attorney. I hope they can work it out. That’s something they have to work out.”Clancy was on trial for allegedly killing her three children. She pleaded not guilty, saying she shouldn’t be legally responsible because of her mental state while suffering from postpartum psychosis. Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, publicly asked for Trump to pardon her on ABC’s Good Morning America.“I’d like to say that perhaps Donald Trump, who felt compelled to speak out on this case, Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady, the type of person she is, what she has been through, and consider a pardon,” Reddington said. Jurors have reportedly spoken out since the case ended, with one woman identifying the holdout juror as a black man, in an interview with CBS Mornings. The jury was made up of three men, with only one being black, effectively singling out the juror who caused a hung jury. Washington Examiner columnist Joe Concha said on Fox News’s Saturday in America with Kayleigh McEnany that the revelation now poses a risk of that holdout juror being doxed.
