The Opener: Carroll Walk-Off, Peters At-Bat, Clinches

With Christian Koss flying down the line, Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn unleashed a 99.8 mph throw to end last night’s game (video link via MLB on X). It was the second-fastest infield assist in the Statcast era (h/t Sarah Langs of MLB.com). 1. Carroll wins it for D-Backs The Diamondbacks were two outs away from falling further behind the Padres for the final NL Wild Card spot on Monday. Corbin Carroll came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with a man on second, facing a one-run deficit. The outfielder got a 2-1 splitter from Jack Ralston in the middle of the strike zone and drove it over the right-field fence. The walk-off blast kept Arizona two and a half games behind San Diego. Carroll is hitting just .184 in September, but he has five extra-base hits, including a pair of homers. 2. White Sox take series opener vs. Guardians The White Sox and Guardians entered Monday’s action separated by a half-game atop the AL Central. The game was scoreless after five innings, with the tandem of Sean Newcomb and Sean Burke matching Cleveland ace Gavin Williams. Chicago finally got to Williams in the sixth inning. The rally was spurred by a ridiculous 18-pitch at-bat from Tristan Peters. The All-Star outfielder fouled off a dozen pitches before finally taking ball four. With his pitch count at 113, Williams was removed. The White Sox would go on to score six times in the inning. Toronto also lost, so Cleveland remained one game ahead in the Wild Card race. 3. Dodgers and Yankees punch their tickets The Dodgers and Yankees both secured postseason berths on Monday. Los Angeles did it behind a brilliant performance from Tarik Skubal. The lefty fired seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts in a win over the Reds. Kyle Tucker and Teoscar Hernandez both homered. New York dispatched the Twins in comeback fashion. Down 2-1 in the eighth inning, the Yankees strung together five hits to take the lead. Aaron Judge then capped the rally with a three-run homer, his first since returning from the IL.
