The New ‘Avatar: Seven Havens’ Trailer Just Made Life Harder for Korra Defenders

Paramount + just dropped a brand-new official trailer for Avatar: Seven Havens, the newest sequel series to Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, from creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Fair warning to Korra defenders—the world’s toughest soldiers—our ever-present battle against slander lobbied against her just got a lot harder. The new trailer’s overarching theme is that Avatar‘s once-segmented world has finally been truly united. Not because of the herculean efforts of the element-bending, reincarnated peacemaker, but in spite of it. The world really hates the Avatar. That’s bad news for our newest hero, Pavi (Saheli Khan), whose mere existence as humanity’s new hope has the world hunting her and punishing anyone who gives her safe harbor. Evidently, her predecessor, Korra (Janet Varney), doomed humanity, so everyone and their mother wants to put the kibosh on any new Avatar, making matters worse for benders, nonbenders, and critters from the spirit world. Thankfully, Pavi has some support via her twin sister, Nisha (Aishu Devan), a boy named Jae (Major Curda), and members of a secret society called the Order of the White Phoenix. Alongside the new trailer, we also got word on the release rollout for Seven Havens‘ 26 episodes on Paramount+. The first three episodes premiere on the streamer on October 9th. After that, every subsequent Friday will see another three episodes drop, up to episode 13 on October 30. For folks doing the math, that’s only half the show’s episode run. There’s a reason for that. Seven Havens‘ 13 episodes make up Book One of the series, following the original show’s season-naming convention. Details on when Book Two of Seven Havens will premiere will be provided at a later date. That’s not all the Seven Havens news we’ve been graced with this week. In an interview with Polygon, showrunner Sehaj Sethi revealed when exactly the Avatar sequel series takes place. While it was already pretty obvious that the new show would take place well after the events of The Legend of Korra—what with reincarnation being the whole kit and kaboodle of how the show’s mythos works—it turns out Seven Havens is taking a huge time leap forward from Korra‘s steampunk setting. How many years forward? Seven Havens transpires 225 years after the events of Korra. While that would certainly mean that Korra would’ve lived centuries beyond when we last saw her and Asami walk into the spirit world at the end of Book Four, an avatar reaching triple digits in age isn’t totally unheard of. Famously, Avatar Kyoshi lived to be 230 years old. Evidently, being an all-powerful bender comes with having more time on the clock. Which might explain why Korra’s bad reputation in Seven Havens might’ve seen her take a page out of Kyoshi’s playbook in how she dealt with problems more efficiently than Aang through her fists over talking it out. I stand by my canceled queen nonetheless. Although the circumstances of the world hating Korra ripple into the fandom’s own treatment of her as a paraiah, here’s hoping DiMartino and Konietzko aren’t capping to appease a vocal sect of its fandom by throwing her under the bus and have something more layered planned for her and her mentorship of Pavi.
