Despite running for seven seasons and earning a cult following, Agents of SHIELD feels like Marvel's most forgotten series, as it remains detached from the MCU. While Netflix's Defenders shows suffered a similar fate, Daredevil: Born Again brought these projects into the MCU canon, making Agents of SHIELD a real outlier. It premiered in 2013, just a year after The Avengers, suggesting the events of this show would directly impact the larger universe, but that wasn't the case. Not only did these characters not show up anywhere else, but the entire series was barely referenced for well over a decade. Thankfully, Marvel finally seems to be remembering it. In addition to Daredevil: Born Again alluding to Agents of SHIELD being canon within the MCU, Marvel has officially announced a sequel series titled Zodiac. As of now, the actual plot remains under wraps, meaning it may not be a direct follow-up. That said, the show's logo features SHIELD's identifiable emblem, sparking speculation that the projects are related. To add more fuel to the fire, Clark Gregg, who plays Phil Coulson, posted this logo on Instagram, meaning there is certainly some kind of connection. With Marvel clearly welcoming the idea of Zodiac being the MCU's Agents of SHIELD sequel, at least to some degree, it sets up an exciting new era for the franchise. Fans of the original show will be ecstatic to see some familiar faces back, and SHIELD can be used to set up the next stages of the MCU. With a targeted release year of 2028, it also makes the project even more important, as it will provide our first real glimpse of what Marvel TV looks like following Avengers: Doomsday. Zodiac Is The MCU's First New TV Series Confirmed After Avengers: Doomsday With Avengers: Doomsday just a few months away, Marvel fans are not just excited to see what the movie has in store, but also where the MCU goes afterward. Fortunately, the announcement of Zodiac gives us a small glimpse into the future, and as the first new TV series confirmed for after Doomsday, it will launch a fresh era. Although Daredevil: Born Again season 3 will release shortly after Avengers: Doomsday, it isn't a new title. It will also be the show's final season, suggesting Daredevil: Born Again's cancelation will end this era of Marvel TV and wipe the slate clean for Zodiac's arrival in 2028. There is still time for Marvel to announce other shows that could arrive earlier than Zodiac, but as it stands, it will lead this new wave of MCU TV. It's an area Marvel has struggled in, as ever since creating series for Disney+, the results have been pretty mixed, with none of these projects lasting more than three seasons. Ironically, the longest-running TV series associated with the MCU is Agents of SHIELD, which could be a good sign for Zodiac. Perhaps this post-Doomsday plan is to make shows run for longer, but even if that isn't the case, Zodiac will set the tone for what's to come, assuming it isn't delayed or canceled. Perhaps this is the reason we still don't know exactly what Zodiac will be about, as it could have direct ties to Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Still, regardless of what the future holds for this project, its placement in the MCU's release schedule indicates it will be a big show that signifies a substantial change for superhero television. Expect Doomsday To Completely Reshape The MCU With Doomsday being the first Avengers movie in over seven years, there are naturally big expectations for the film, but alongside being highly anticipated, it will also have huge ramifications for the MCU going forward. After nearly two decades of incredible stories and characters, it feels like Marvel's Cinematic Universe is ready for a big shake-up. Major heroes like Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff have already been killed off alongside various villains, while the current versions of Thor, Loki, and the Guardians of the Galaxy seem to have run their course. As a result, the MCU has already started planning the future through the New Avengers and the Fantastic Four. However, Avengers: Doomsday will be the start of a new beginning, marking a seismic shift in this universe. Not only will it cement Dr. Doom as Marvel's new main antagonist, but it will likely kill off some characters that have become redundant. With an X-Men reboot planned for after Secret Wars, we're almost guaranteed to lose the current version of this group, since many actors are reprising their roles after many years. It feels like Doomsday is to Secret Wars what Infinity War was to Endgame, but this time around, the losses will be permanent. Obviously, Secret Wars will continue reshaping things, but with Avengers: Doomsday focusing on incursions and introducing one of the most powerful villains in the franchise, the MCU won't be the same after this. Therefore, the upcoming Avengers film looks set to crown new main characters, introduce fresh team dynamics, and end the previous era once and for all. With this in mind, Zodiac will surely be more than a simple Agents of SHIELD sequel, especially following such a big conflict. Knowing we will inevitably get different takes on familiar characters as well as new ones entirely coming out of Avengers: Doomsday makes it the biggest Marvel release in years, and nothing will be the same when the dust settles.
