The Lincoln Lawyer Season 5 Successfully Replaces Harry Bosch

While The Lincoln Lawyer season 5 won’t feature the title character of Prime Video’s Bosch after all, this could actually be good for the final chapter of Netflix’s legal drama. When Prime Video’s Bosch debuted in February 2014, it is fair to say that even committed fans of detective dramas could not have predicted how big an impact the series would have on the genre in the years that followed. Adapted from Michael Connelly’s novel series of the same name, Bosch followed Titus Welliver’s titular LAPD homicide detective as he investigated murders while also keeping a close eye on his department’s own corruption issues. While HBO’s True Detective season 1, which arrived within a month of Bosch’s debut, is often called the most influential detective drama of the 2010s, Bosch’s franchise gives the critical hit a run for its money. Without True Detective, viewers might never have gotten Sharp Objects, Mare of Easttown, and a slew of other acclaimed dark psychological thrillers. However, after Bosch’s seven-season run ended, the Connelly adaptation spawned the three-season sequel series Bosch: Legacy, the two-season spinoff Ballard, and the upcoming prequel Bosch: Start of Watch. The popularity of Connelly’s series even resulted in Netflix turning one of the author’s other novel series into a show with The Lincoln Lawyer. Image courtesy of MovieStillsDb Staring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, The Lincoln Lawyer marks the second time Connelly’s troubled antihero, Mickey Haller, made it to the screen. Previously played by Matthew McConaughey in 2011’s standalone movie The Lincoln Lawyer, Haller is a conflicted former addict who gets his nickname thanks to his unconventional decision to run his legal practice out of the boot of his flashy Lincoln town car. Throughout The Lincoln Lawyer’s four seasons to date, Haller has slowly gotten his life back together, while always showing up in the courtroom. Like Bosch, Haller can pull himself out of his personal troubles when his job calls for it. Netflix’s upcoming The Lincoln Lawyer season 5 was set to make the comparisons between the pair even more obvious, as the outing is based on Connelly’s 2025 novel Resurrection Walk. In the shared fictional universe of Connelly’s novels, Bosch and Haller are half-brothers, and Bosch spends much of Resurrection Walk assisting Haller in his latest case. Sadly, the Bosch franchise belongs to Prime Video, while Netflix owns the rights to The Lincoln Lawyer. As such, the odds of an in-universe crossover were always vanishingly unlikely, and made even more implausible when Welliver moved on from the role. Although he played Bosch in a guest star capacity during 2025’s Ballard season 1, Welliver’s busy schedule means he won’t even be providing a voice-over for Bosch: Start of Watch. The Lincoln Lawyer Season 5’s Potential Bosch Crossover Was Always Going To Be Tough Image via Everett Collection As such, The Lincoln Lawyer season 5 ended up replacing Bosch’s role in Resurrection Walk with Cobie Smulders’s Emi, Mickey’s half-sister who was introduced in season 4. Emi is set to receive a spinoff of her own after The Lincoln Lawyer ends with season 5, meaning this is the perfect time to get viewers invested in her story. Speaking to the Spokesman Review as part of the Northwest Passages conversation series, Connelly explained that Bosch became Mickey’s half-sister Emi in season 5’s reworked version of the novel’s plot, and said of the change that “it worked out pretty well.” Considering how much TV adaptations of beloved detectives like Karin Slaughter’s Will Trent often drastically alter their literary source material, it makes sense that Connelly isn’t worried about the change. It would always have been near-impossible for Bosch and The Lincoln Lawyer to cross over, and not just because of the legal, practical questions of competing streaming services owning the rights to the characters. Bosch’s dark, grim neo-noir tone would clash massively with the melodramatic, sunny fun of Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer, a soapier, self-consciously sillier series with none of the former’s patient pacing.
