‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ Ends With Late-Night Emmy Win: “Catch Y’All On The Flip”

Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show went out in Emmy-winning style, four months after it ended its run on CBS. The Late Show won Outstanding Variety Series for the second consecutive, and final time. It beat The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, SNL and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Colbert noted that if you liked the comedy at the Mariska Hargitay-hosted ceremony, it was written by his show’s former writing staff, and that they were available for work. “Thank you so much on behalf of the over 200 people who threw themselves at this show for 11 years to try to do the best show they possibly could to you. The thing about these late shows is that besides being a really good, steady job, is that they require so many people that they’re a fantastic incubator for young people to come in to learn to work professionally on a deadline in cooperation in collaboration, and that is the future of our business that we have to look after,” he said. Given that The Late Show won last year, shortly after it emerged that CBS had axed the franchise, it was slightly less bombastic appearance. Watch on Deadline Colbert also joked that he’d interviewed most of the people in the Peacock Theater. “Over the last 21 years, I’ve interviewed at least 1000 of you. Thank you for coming on to talk to this idiot. I want you to know that you were the perfect guest. This segment went great, and I’m sorry I forgot to play your clip,” he said. After thanking his wife Evelyn McGee, he thanked the audience for watching. “We hope you enjoyed the show. We had a great time doing it for you. That’s it. Thank you. We’ll catch y’all on the flip,” he concluded. The win comes after the late-night show had a surprisingly good night at last weekend’s Emmy event (formerly known as the Creative Arts awards). The series came away with two big upsets at the event: Colbert Before Air won the Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama Or Variety Series and and The Late Show won Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series. It also picked up a picture editing win. This year’s voting process was slightly unusual as all five entries in the category – Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Daily Show, Saturday Night Live and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver – could have won at the same time after the category was designated as an area award, meaning that whoever got over 90% from voters would win a statuette.
