The Goonies' R-Rated Stealth Remake Arrives In 2 Weeks

The spiritual successor to The Goonies arrives in theaters on September 18, and it looks like it's going to be an R-Rated blast. The blockbuster comedy movie genre does not look like it did 10 years ago. Whether because of changing viewing habits or a lack of major stars, we can no longer count on a handful of these films to come out every year. It's telling that in the last couple of years, the biggest comedy movies we can point to are independent projects, action and superhero films posing as comedies, and films like Good Boys and Booksmart, where the main characters are purposefully played by young unknown actors. On the rare occasion we get an R-Rated comedy, we can only hope it stands up to the best comedies of the 2000s, films from Judd Apatow, The Hangover, even Wedding Crashers. Tiny Fugitives has as good a shot as any comedy film of being the next big hit, with a lot going for it. Set for release on September 18, Tiny Fugitives follows a group of 12-year-olds at a sleepaway camp who decide they would prefer to stay at their paradise-like camp rather than return to the real world and so plan a way to ensure they never leave. Johnny Knoxville stars as Bob, the camp's 50-year-old counselor who would rather kids never come at all. Directed by Michael Lewen, who directed 2022's Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between and produced Trainwreck, among several other films, Tiny Fugitives is in the lineage of movies like Good Boys, Neighbors, and Booksmart while adding in a dash of The Goonies-style adventure and a heaping helping of Jackass-inspired stunts. Tiny Fugitives Is Like Jackass Remaking The Goonies Like The Goonies, Tiny Fugitives involves a group of children not wanting to confront the real, mundane, but life-changing problems that adults have to constantly go through. In The Goonies, it's having to move after being priced out of a neighborhood; in Tiny Fugitives, it's having to return from vacation or camp and go back to the real world. Also, like in The Goonies, the children in Tiny Fugitives are pursued by a bitter old man, though it's only one man, so imagine that Joey Pantoliano didn't have the other Fratellis alongside him in his pursuit of the kids. It's The Goonies and Good Boys, and because Knoxville is involved, you know it's also part-Jackass. It's unclear if the stunts in the film are real or not in the same way that Knoxville put his body on the line for Bad Grandpa and Action Point, but the trailer features several actors, Knoxville and the kids, suffering severe bodily harm in one way or another. Even if they aren't real, Tiny Fugitives should provide the cringe-inducing hilarity of the Jackass movies. What's Going On With The Actual Goonies Sequel? As for the actual sequel to The Goonies, don't expect a September 2026 release date. Details have been sparse about the movie, and the idea has been in the ether since the early 2000s. In 2025, it finally got a real update, with Potsy Ponciroli signing on to write the script, and in August of that year, he announced he was 95% done with the script. In August 2026, Ke Huy Quan, who played Data in the original film, said he still has his hopes up for a sequel (via USAToday). While the chatter about the film seems to suggest the movie is going forward, we'll need to hear something official before we can mark our calendars like we have for Tiny Fugitives.
