Calling all crumpet lovers! (Picture: Shutterstock / Dave Denby Photography) From The Cheese Barge to Where the Pancakes Are, London is home to plenty of specialist food spots. And another is set to join the ranks soon, as the city is getting a new cafe dedicated to crumpets. Jones’ Crumpets is launching its first brick-and-mortar site this autumn in Notting Hill, after nine years of pop-ups, farmer’s market stalls and selling crumpets online. Customers can expect a selection of flavoured crumpets, as well as crumpet-based dishes with sweet and savoury toppings. Launched in 2017, Jones’ Crumpets is an artisan crumpet brand that originally started as a supper club, before becoming a wholesale supplier to restaurants. Their crumpets can be found in shops and delis across London already, including Superette, La Fromagerie, Supermarket of Dreams, and Parsnips. You can also buy them each weekend from the Primrose Hill Food Market, Marylebone Farmer’s Market, Queen’s Park Farmer’s Market and Kerb Francis Road. The crumpets don’t come cheap, though, starting from £7.50 for a pack of five classic crumpets and rising to £9 for five flavoured ones, such as dark chocolate, double cheese, or cheese and chive. According to reviews online, they’re very much worth the price as Brits have proclaimed them ‘the best’ crumpets they’ve ever had. Over on TikTok, the comments are similarly strong, hailing them as a ‘taste sensation’, ‘irresistible’, ‘10/10’, and ‘significantly better than Warburtons’. Not everyone feels this way, though, with some claiming they’re ‘gentrified crumpets’, the price is ‘daylight robbery’, and they taste ‘average’ and a little ‘oily’. So, what’s the deal here? Are Jones’ Crumpets really that good? Having tried them, I can confirm the classic ones are something special – far superior to any other crumpet I’ve ever eaten. It’s fresh, fluffy and tastes gloriously homemade (Picture: Courtney Pochin) The outside crisps up perfectly in the toaster, while the fluffy inside becomes gloriously stodgy when you add your toppings, thanks to the deep holes that allow the butter to really sink all the way through the crumpet. My favourite thing about Jones’ Crumpets, though, was that they look, taste, and feel freshly homemade and high quality. In a world filled with ultra-processed nonsense, this is refreshing and feels like a real treat. Yes, these crumpets are waaaaay more expensive than ones you’d get in the supermarket, but they’re in a league of their own. I wouldn’t buy them every week, but when I feel like I want to splash out a little, they’re the ideal indulgence. And if you’re looking to be really decadent, I can recommend trying the dark chocolate ones, which have a layer of 55 percent Belgian dark chocolate sealed inside. This becomes lusciously molten after being toasted, making it feel more like dessert than breakfast. Are you a crumpet fan? In other food news, it might upset some to know that Gen Z has decided biscuits are for ‘old people’ – specifically Rich Tea and malted milk. But Marks & Spencer is attempting to make biscuits cool again with its recent launches, including a retro biscuit assortment and custard creme spread. If this isn’t for you, Sainsbury’s has unveiled a new mince pie advent calendar for Christmas. And those who prefer a savoury snack might be pleased to learn that Walkers is launching a new ‘premium’ crisp range in the UK. Known as Walkers Gold, the selection will feature fancy flavours like Black Truffle and is set to rival Kettle Chips and Tyrrells. Do you have a story you’d like to share?
