Going through those memories, everything from their hitchhiking adventures as teenagers to their huge accomplishments with The Beatles, McCartney wrote "Here Today," which is essentially one last conversation, where he finally tells him everything he wishes he could have said. "But as for me / I still remember how it was before / And I am holding back the tears no more / I love you," he sings in the bridge. In his book, McCartney explains that in the '50s and '60s, boys were encouraged to hide their feelings behind cynicism, so he never dared to tell his best friend he loved him, and he wishes he could have, so he tells him in the song. Paul McCartney Still Plays This Song at Every Show "Here Today" came out on McCartney's 1982 album, Tug of War, and to this day, it has its own special moment during McCartney's live shows. It's a song that is always a little hard for him to get through, because all of those feelings of grief come rushing back to him. "It was very emotional, writing this song," McCartney explained. "I was just sitting there in that bare room, thinking of John, and realizing I'd lost him. And it was a powerful loss, so to have a conversation with him in a song was some form of solace. Somehow, I was with him again. 'And if I say / I really loved you,'— there it is, I've said it. Which I would never have said to him." It is always a very charged moment in a Paul McCartney concert, since the Beatle seems to be recreating the moment and scene in which he wrote the song. The lights are lowered, and it's just him with his acoustic guitar in the dark. Only this time, instead of being alone in his grief, he's surrounded by thousands of people, who he can see are crying with him and supporting him.
