Texas A&M Forest Service Launches Prescribed Burn Manager Insurance Program

The Texas A&M Forest Service launched an insurance program this week to provide liability protection for qualified certified and insured prescribed burn managers (CIPBMs). The Texas Prescribed Burn Manager Insurance Program was created in response to a recent House Bill establishing a temporary self-insurance pool for CIPBMs. Prescribed burning, also known as a control burn, is a cost-effective planned burn that clears out dead wood, dry leaves and thick brush in order to prevent future wildfires from spreading. “Through the Texas Prescribed Burn Manager Insurance Program, Texas A&M Forest Service is fulfilling that land-grant promise by empowering land managers with tools to reduce hazardous fuel loads as well as the liability protection while performing those practices,” said Robert L. Albritton, chairman of The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. Commercial insurance options have become limited or unavailable for CIPBMs across Texas, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service, which protects and manages trees, forests and natural resources. The program available to qualified certified and insured prescribed burn managers who meet the program requirements and maintain compliance throughout the coverage period.
