A trough formation in the Bay of Bengal is likely to bring in some light rain and also lower the temperatures by a few notches for the next few days, according to meteorologists at the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) here on Tuesday (October 13, 2026).Senior weather consultant Y.V. Rama Rao said easterly winds and a trough moving towards Tamil Nadu are likely to trigger rainfall activity across Telangana for the next four days. “This could bring temperatures back to normal levels. Recent temperatures have been 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal across both Hyderabad and the districts due to clear skies, dry weather and the influence of El Nino conditions,” he said.Day temperatures in Hyderabad between 33C and 35CThe day temperatures in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area have been hovering between 33C and 35C, while most districts have recorded highs ranging from 34C to 37C. In comparison, temperatures during the same period last year were mostly between 32C and 35C. Night temperatures have remained close to normal, ranging from 19C to 22C in Hyderabad and 20C to 23C in the districts. The prolonged dry spell has been particularly evident this October. Telangana received 5.5 cm of rainfall in October last year against the normal 4.8 cm, but rainfall this month has been ‘zero’.Mr. Rama Rao noted that after five to six years of above-normal rainfall, Telangana has experienced a significantly weaker Southwest monsoon this year. It has recorded a 17% rainfall deficit, the second-worst performance since 2014, when rainfall was 29% below normal and all monsoon months received less-than-normal precipitation. Not optimistic about Northeast MonsoonThe impact of the deficiency has been aggravated by poor rainfall in neighbouring Maharashtra and Karnataka, resulting in lower inflows into the Krishna and Godavari river basins, he said. Looking ahead, Mr. Rao was not optimistic about the Northeast Monsoon season from October to December.“We are expected to receive around nine centimetres of rainfall this month, but there has been almost none so far. The next two months are also unlikely to bring substantial rainfall,” he observed. From June to date, Telangana has received 61.6 cm of rain against a normal 78.9 cm, a deficit of 22%. In Hyderabad, the shortfall is steeper at 32%, with rainfall measuring 45.7 cm against the normal 67.6 cm. Published - October 13, 2026 06:46 pm IST
