Pop star Taylor Swift's Patient Zero video has Swifties hooked, with fans calling the gothic visual chilling, beautiful and cinematic. The self-directed video stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, and turns the song’s love triangle into a ghost story.Soon after the music video dropped on Spotify and Apple Music, fans rushed to social media to express their excitement. Some called it “chilling, beautiful” and a “mini movie” while others said they could not stop watching it.The premiere brought to a close a busy week for the pop star. She announced the expanded album on Wednesday, a 13-second preview aired on CBS Mornings the next day, and the single and full album were released on Friday, September 25. At the same awards show, Swift received the first MTV VMA Artist Director Honors award, collected her 31st VMA and moved past Beyonce to become the most decorated artist in the event’s history.In the video, Johnson plays the wife of an abusive husband, played by Farrell, while being haunted by the image of a ghost. Swift appears as the husband’s former partner, giving the song’s central triangle a darker screen treatment. Swift directed the video herself, with three-time Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki, known for films including The Revenant, Birdman and Gravity, serving as cinematographer. After the debut, Swift wrote online that working with Lubezki felt like a dream sequence and said she had learnt a great deal from watching him work. She also thanked Johnson and Farrell for giving their time and talent to the project.In an Instagram note, Swift wrote that the Patient Zero video was finally out in the world and that getting to work with (Emmanuel) Lubezki (Mexican cinematographer) was "something out of a dream sequence". She said she learnt ‘so much’ from watching him in action. She thanked Johnson and Colin Farrell for trusting her with their ‘time, taste, and talent’, adding: "Giggling with your friend because you’re twinning for an entire shoot was a new and truly delightful experience." She also said Farrell’s turn as a villain was even more impressive when spending time around him, calling him "an absolute light". Swift also thanked Cara Delevingne for agreeing to play "the lusty other woman", adding, "That’s what friends are for?"Swift said the video let her explore the cinematic and literary genres she loves. She wrote that she wanted to incorporate elements of gothic ghost stories, true crime and psychological thrillers in a setting she had not shot in very much. She said the house in the video was a metaphor for "the coldness of a relationship that’s faded and atrophied". She accepted the honour on stage at the Peacock Theater, spoke about her passion for creating and directing videos, and then introduced the premiere of Patient Zero.
