Taylor Swift crashes Dakota Johnson's SNL monologue, jokes about her exes

Taylor Swift finally answered the question Saturday Night Live fans had been asking all week. The singer made her expected cameo on the latest episode, joining host, actor and her very dear friend Dakota Johnson during the opening monologue and later returning with a birthday cake. The latter was there to promote her recently released film Verity.Swift appeared just as Johnson was joking about her very public breakups with musicians. Introducing her as her “literal therapist”, Johnson said she had “really good friends” who supported her without judging her.Swift then walked into the frame with a perfectly deadpan response: “I’m not your therapist, actually.”What followed was a playful exchange about Johnson turning up at Swift’s house with wine, oversharing and eventually getting driven home by Swift’s security. When Johnson responded, “Sleepover, yay!”, Swift added that she would give her Pedialyte before sending her home. The joke fit neatly into a monologue that was already centred on Johnson’s dating history.Watch the clip here:Dakota Johnson’s monologue! https://t.co/ZxOi5zVZLF— Saturday Night Live (@nbcsnl) October 4, 2026Dakota Johnson jokes about her musician exesJohnson, who previously hosted SNL in 2019, opened the show by poking fun at her recent breakups with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and musician Role Model.“I went through two very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians,” she said, before adding, “Looking for a third.”She also compared dating musicians to her new film Verity, describing both as a “psychosexual erotic thriller”. According to Johnson, some musicians “don’t wear shoes”, some are “terrible in bed”, but all of them somehow end up in her DMs.Then came the line Swifties were waiting for. While talking about how dating musicians was supposedly a public service, Johnson thanked America, England, parts of Ireland, and “Cleveland”.The Cleveland reference was widely understood as a nod to Travis Kelce, whose NFL career has strong ties to the city through the Cleveland area, and the exchange quickly became one of the most talked-about moments from the monologue.Swift then pointed out that it was Johnson’s birthday, although she was a little early. Later, during the goodnights, she returned with a birthday cake for the host. Why Taylor Swift’s SNL cameo wasn’t a complete surpriseSwift’s appearance had been the subject of speculation before the episode aired. There was one particularly conspicuous clue at the Emmys, where she appeared in an Law & Order: SVU sketch packed with Easter eggs. A large Saturday Night Live logo could be seen on a bulletin board behind her. There was never much expectation that Swift would perform, though. Turnstile had already been announced as the episode’s musical guest. The timing also meant that some viewers had to wait longer than others to see whether the rumoured cameo was actually happening. The episode was delayed in some markets because of college football, leaving fans turning to social media for updates.Swift and Johnson aren't strangers to sharing the screen. The pair recently appeared together in the music video for Swift’s latest single Patient Zero, which Swift directed and co-starred in.Johnson plays a woman whose seemingly perfect marriage begins to unravel, while Swift appears as a mysterious figure trying to warn her about her husband. Swift released an expanded version of the video earlier on Saturday, featuring additional behind-the-scenes footage.Swift has hosted SNL once, in 2009, and has returned several times over the years as a musical guest and cameo.- Ends
