Sheridan has played a major role in reviving the Western genre, with Yellowstone (2018–2024) emerging as one of the most popular television series in recent years. While viewers have readily embraced Westerns on the small screen, their success in theaters has proven more elusive, with a new remake of one of John Wayne's most celebrated films proving just how tough the box office can be. Since its release on October 9, Angel and the Badman has lost a staggering 2,159 theaters, falling from 2,263 locations to just 104 in its third weekend. The Western, which stars Tulsa King actor Neal McDonough, saw its theatrical presence shrink by 993 locations in its second weekend, followed by another 1,166 on October 23. In just two weeks, the film has lost 95.4% of the theaters that initially screened it. The film's box office performance has been equally disappointing. It debuted domestically with just $2.1 million across 2,263 theaters, averaging roughly $935 per location. Its second weekend saw an even steeper setback, with earnings plunging nearly 80% to $433,220. By October 21, the Western had accumulated approximately $3.8 million domestically. Now showing in barely 100 theaters, Angel and the Badman faces an uphill battle to add much more to its overall box office total. A remake of John Wanye's 1947 Western of the same name, the new Angel and the Badman follows a wounded outlaw who steals Confederate gold from a ruthless gang leader named Laredo (Neal McDonough), stumbles onto the property of a pious ranch family, is nursed back to health, and offered the possibility of a life away from violence. Other than Neal McDonough, who plays Cal Thresher in Tulsa King seasons 2–4, the cast also includes Zachary Levi in the lead role alongside Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive), Meg Fraser, Jean Louisa Kelly, Maurice Greene, Sean Bridgers, and John Pyper-Ferguson. It was directed by Julio Quintana, with a script written by Jaime Hernandez, Kevin M. Townsend, and Christopher Tuffin. The remake has received overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics, resulting in a 23% Rotten Tomatoes score, a significant downgrade from the original movie's 71% score. However, the remake's 78% audience score is a slight increase from the original's 67%. Nearly eight decades after the original debuted, the new Angel and the Badman remake has attempted to introduce John Wayne's classic Western to a new generation, but audiences aren't exactly riding out in droves to see it.
