Taron Egerton on Making One of the Most Unpredictable Horror-Comedies of the Year

Taron Egerton, Jessica Henwick, Charly Clive, and writer-director Jonathan Schey discuss balancing the dark comedy's genres and share insight into each of their characters. Clive also teases her hopes for Season 2 of HBO's series Rooster. In writer-director Jonathan Schey’s feature directorial debut, Everybody Wants to F*ck Me, Taron Egerton plays Adam, the “nice guy” who capitalizes on his imagined ability to be a virtuous man in the modern world of dating. The dark comedy, which skews delightfully into thriller territory, celebrated its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, where Collider’s Perri Nemiroff spoke with the team about getting Schey's ambitious debut off the ground and their on-set chemistry. In the movie, Adam believes himself to have mastered “enlightened masculinity.” He’s very conscious of his ability to listen to his women coworkers, consumes feminist literature, and is just the right amount of self-deprecating while chatting at women in bars. However, when Adam meets Sofia (Jessica Henwick), his perfect world is turned upside down when she calls him out on his behavior. Soon after, with his ego bruised, Adam begins to notice a barrage of people enamored by his charms to the point of stalking and aggressively pursuing him. In his own words, Egerton calls Adam "a fucking idiot," but he tells Nemiroff that he and Schey knew there had to be more to the character than that for any chance of success. He explains: “It's really interesting. It's an intuitive thing. You have a thousand small decisions to make every day, and you trust that if you make hopefully mostly good ones, then the film will turn out well and the performance will turn out well. It's always a bit of a balancing act, particularly with a character like Adam, because he does challenge an audience a lot, and he is somebody that is quite difficult to root for at times. But I think one of the things that John and I connected very quickly early on is that it won't work if you don't at least have sympathy for him, or at least have the capacity to engage with him empathetically. So, I think it was about trying to play him in all of his glorious human fallibility, really. He's just trying his little best, but he's just a fucking idiot, you know? And I think we just wanted him to be as real as possible so that it felt like this kind of mad story could be as grounded and believable as possible.” During this interview at the Collider Media Studio, presented by Campari and The Cayman Islands, Egerton, Schey, Henwick, and Charly Clive (Rooster) discuss the inspirations behind their dark comedy and what it took to get it from script to screen.
