Tamil Nadu Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar expresses displeasure over conduct of some MLAs in Assembly

Prabhakar, on Tuesday (August 25, 2026), expressed displeasure over the conduct of some MLAs during the proceedings in the House. He said the responsibility of protecting the dignity and decorum of the House lay with both the ruling party and the Opposition.Mr. Prabhakar said his intention was to conduct the House with dignity and without violating the conventions of the Assembly, while giving members an opportunity to take part in the debates. “But I have been observing for the past two days that some members, particularly those sitting on the back benches on both sides, are crossing the limits, coming out of their seats and moving towards the well of the House while raising their hands,” he said.The Speaker also expressed anguish over inappropriate words being used by some members during the proceedings. He said as the Assembly proceedings are being telecast live, members should be aware that people are watching their conduct.He told members not to put him in a position where he would have to take action against them. “My intention is not to expel anyone from the House. I do not want to be pushed into such a situation where I have to expel someone and justify that action.”He also advised both sides that there was no need to challenge one another merely for the sake of challenging someone when they were speaking.
