Tamil Nadu CM has written to Centre on setting up inland container depot in Tiruchi: Durai Vaiko

Joseph Vijay had written a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stating that the State government would soon carry out a detailed study on establishing a multi-modal logistics hub (inland container depot) in Tiruchi.Releasing the copy of the letter dated August 24, he said Mr. Vijay had thanked her, after the Union Finance Minister sought Mr. Vijay’s suggestions in the letter dated August 7 on the establishment of an inland container depot in Tiruchi and extended the support of the Union Ministry in this regard.The infrastructure will certainly benefit the trade and industry in the region.Policy decisionIn the letter, the Chief Minister said the State government had already taken a policy decision to establish a multi-modal logistics hub in Tiruchi. A detailed study to develop the facility by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) will soon commence. Located in the Central region of Tamil Nadu, Tiruchi had a large number of manufacturing and agro processing industries in its vicinity as well as significant industrial and agricultural connectivity. It also has an International Airport. Hence, establishment of Inland Container Depot would certainly help the export ecosystem of the region, he said.Mr. Vijay further said the proposed facility would take advantage of its almost equal distance from the key sea ports such as Chennai, Kamarajar, Kattupalli, and VOC-Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu and Kochi and Vizhinjam in Kerala.The facility will have container handling, warehousing, cold chain, and temperature-controlled facilities, terminals, cargo consolidation and distribution hubs, and customs clearance.Mr. Durai Vaiko said he had met Ms. Sitharaman in New Delhi five times and presented petitions, urging her Ministry to take steps to set up the facility in Tiruchi. He had also met Mr. Vijay in Chennai recently and impressed upon him the need for initiating steps to establish the facility.Thanking Mr. Vijay for taking action on the demand quickly, the MP said the proposal was proceeding in the right direction. The Union Finance Ministry will be the nodal agency for establishing the inland container depot.With Mr. Vijay’s letter, the Central and State governments will take all necessary steps to set up the facility in Tiruchi as early as possible.
