Sign in to your ScreenRant account After just three seasons, Syfy decided to pull the plug on an ambitious sci-fi series. Adapted from a bestselling book series, the show in question consistently landed in critics' books and even acquired a cult following. Yet, its run was cut short after three seasons. Fortunately, this is when Prime Video stepped in and renewed the series before it lasted for three more seasons. Adapted from James S.A. Corey's acclaimed book series, The Expanse was first developed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby for the Syfy Network. However, in 2018, Syfy prematurely ended the show's run in 2018. Sci-fi fans were devastated as The Expanse was easily one of the greatest additions to the genre in the 21st century. Even some of the best sci-fi series, no matter how much potential they initially show, do not return after being canceled. Perhaps, in a parallel world, The Expanse, too, saw the same fate. Fate, however, had different plans for the series. After extensive campaigns from viewers, Amazon picked up the show and continued it for three more seasons, which cemented its "masterpiece" status. Prime Video Saved The Expanse Before It Became A Space Opera Masterpiece Image via MovieStillsDB Even in its first three seasons, The Expanse was undeniably an incredible sci-fi series. This explains why many relentlessly campaigned to bring it back. However, it was still short of becoming the masterpiece it eventually turned into. Everything from its portrayal of Newtonian physics to geopolitical conflicts between Earth, Mars, and the Belt were compelling in the first three seasons. However, the show initially struggled with pacing issues. Especially in season 1, The Expanse felt inconsistent when it balanced Joe Miller's detective noir arc on Ceres with overarching political tension surrounding the Rocinante crew's escape. Syfy's network budget also limited the visual scope of the series, although its VFX team still did an incredible job. Even main characters in The Expanse, like Holden, Amos, Naomi, and Alex, were yet to break free from their early archetypes in the show's initial chapters. The Expanse season 3 also had to race through Book 2 (Caliban's War) and significantly compress Book 3 (Abaddon's Gate) before ending its run. All in all, the sci-fi series was from its true potential after three installments. The Expanse started putting its brilliance on full display after it returned for three more seasons on Prime Video. If it wasn't for its revival, it seems possible that The Expanse would have become another forgotten sci-fi series that was canceled a little too soon. The Expanse’s Early Cancellation Almost Ruined Its Sci-Fi Legacy Image via MovieStillsDB Landing on Prime Video after its revival not only allowed The Expanse to slightly extend its episode runtimes but also become more realistic. With no broadcast censors holding the show back from exploring the grit and violence of its world, The Expanse gradually became a more accurate and relatable representation of how space colonization works. Going into season 5, The Expanse also finally got to split the Rocinante crew across different locations. This, in turn, helped the series explore and test the individual strengths and journey of its main roster. Even story beats surrounding the Ring Gate and the Marco Inaros and the Free Navy appeared much later, allowing the series to dive deeper into its portrayal of revolutionary stress and economic extinction. All in all, if Prime Video had not given The Expanse a second chance, its legacy would have been far less long-lasting than it is today. While it is unfortunate that even Prime Video canceled the show before it could cover the complete length of its source material, it is hard not to be grateful that Syfy's cancellation did not mark the end of its run.
