Sydney Sweeney's R-Rated Erotic Thriller Is Officially Free To Stream

He is an expert in the entertainment industry, particularly in the golden age of screen superheroes. Simon is also a Rotten Tomatoes approved critic. Over the past six years or so, Sydney Sweeney has made a name for herself as a throwback adult thriller star. While the typical trajectory for breakout TV stars of her profile involves superhero franchises and blockbusters, Sweeney has instead leaned into mid-budget, adult-oriented cinema, seemingly leading the charge for old-school tropes major studios mostly turned their back on years ago. She’s a dyed-in-the-wool R-rated movie star, ignoring the modern trend for sanitized, sexless stories, and flying the flag for tense, high-stakes adult entertainment, the likes of which you might reasonably expect to see from a late 1980s and 1990s star. In particular, Sweeney is still happily making erotic thrillers in a time when mainstream audiences are being told that it’s no longer fashionable. The success of The Housemaid would seem to suggest otherwise, especially as its sequel, The Housemaid's Secret, is one of the most intriguing movie projects of 2027. Fans looking for more in that style from Sweeney now have the chance to watch an earlier erotic thriller she starred in with ease, as The Voyeurs, directed by Michael Mogan, is now streaming for free on Tubi. It’s a throwback to the era of Basic Instinct that marries elements of Rear Window and Body Double, and now is the perfect time to revisit it. It’s an absurd, delightfully twisty thriller that knows exactly what it is, and which was unfairly shunned on its release. If You Like Sydney Sweeney's Movies, You Should Watch The Voyeurs If you have followed Sydney Sweeney's ascent, but somehow missed it on release, The Voyeurs was a key step in establishing her as a risk taker. Not because it’s R-rated or defiantly sexual in its reimagining of familiar Hitchcockian tropes, but because the perception of her as inseparable from the “spoiled characters” she was often drawn to had already almost cost her her role on The White Lotus before she was even cast. According to her, the casting team didn’t believe Euphoria's Cassie was right to play Olivia in the first season of the HBO show. This was her breakout period, after Cassie had drawn such acclaim, and after her performance in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. For Sweeney still be taking roles that some may see as limiting in the options she might have after, as The Voyeurs could be perceived as, was a brave indication of the work she’d commit to later. And in The Voyeurs, fans got an outrageous, sexy thriller that played quite openly as a grown-up homage to Rear Window. It’s the kind of movie you’d expect Rebecca De Mornay to have made in the early 1990s: full of twists that verge on the absurd, escalating tension, and character decisions that don’t rank very high on the intelligence scale, but which feed into the drama perfectly. Sweeney balances toxic, sexual energy with a naivety that is captivating, turning Pippa into a fascinating figure who unravels as her moral compass becomes first tainted and then utterly ruined by her obsessive fascination with her neighbors. She watches them have sex, vicariously enjoying their behavior as a tonic to her own stale relationship with her boyfriend Thomas (Justice Smith), before a series of escalations turn everything towards murder and revenge. The ending is a thing to behold. The Voyeurs Helped Start A Great Sydney Sweeney Trend From our position in 2026, it’s obvious that The Voyeurs was not a one-off experiment, nor an early career edge-case before bigger roles took Sweeney away from this type of movie. it was, more pertinently, something of a launch pad for her to take on more thrillers. Filmmakers saw an appetite for intense, adult-oriented thrillers - sometimes with a side of the absurd - as Prime reported better-than-anticipated streaming numbers for The Voyeurs, and Sweeney was clearly happy to oblige. Her positive working relationship with Michael Mohan led to Immaculate, the psychological horror movie where Sweeney dove headfirst into extreme, unhinged genre material. Before that came Reality, which saw her deliver a critically acclaimed performance in a completely different style of suspense. Beyond that came The Housemaid, of course, but she also made Eden and Echo Valley, which may not have dazzled critics, but continued her commitment to genre work. She’s on a run that makes it clear that she wants to work on projects that balance psychological tension and sexuality with a gleeful abandon to not take themselves entirely seriously. The Voyeurs is a great starting point for that; a deliciously soapy thriller fully committed to keeping adult thrillers alive. The Voyeurs is on Tubi now. Release Date August 25, 2021 Runtime 117 minutes Director Michael Mohan A young Montreal couple becomes obsessed with watching their glamorous neighbors across from the apartment, convinced they are witnessing an affair.
