Sydney Sweeney’s New Euphoria Replacement Is ‘Gossip Girl Meets Veronica Mars’

Published Oct 27, 2026, 1:30 PM EDT After 18 months at Screen Rant, Guy became Classic TV Editor in September 2026, and specializes in leading features content about shows from decades gone by. Having written for and editing several TV, film and music publications, his areas of expertise include comedy, crime, historical drama, Westerns, and political thrillers. Following Euphoria’s dramatic series finale back in May, Sydney Sweeney’s next TV project is widely anticipated to gather momentum towards a production schedule. But although it’s another dark adolescent drama, this project has far more in common with two popular shows from the early 2000s than the series which helped catapult Sweeney to superstardom in 2019. Based on a bestselling novel by Jessica Goldman, The Players Table is now six years in the making, yet isn’t expected to be released before 2028. However, we already know it combines the high-society backbiting and gilt-edged satire of Gossip Girl with the emotionally-charged mystery-solving and neo-noir stylings of Veronica Mars. Sweeney gave fans a reassuring update about the progress of The Players Table following extensive delays to its development earlier this decade, and it appears that the show has been moving forward since 2024. It will likely be the next production she works on following 2027 feature-length releases The Housemaid's Secret, The Custom of the Country, and Gundam. Like Sydney Sweeney’s only other live-action TV shows of the 2020s, Euphoria and The White Lotus, The Players Table is being made for HBO. It’s a co-production between Sweeney’s Endeavor Content, Jean-Marc Vallée’s company Crazyrose, and distributor Fifth Season, which has produced the recent Netflix hits His & Hers and East of Eden. HBO Max Series The Players Table Is Sydney Sweeney’s TV Follow-Up To Euphoria The Players Table is Sydney Sweeney’s latest HBO thriller, and it apparently builds on her track record of playing melodramatic, acid-tongued teenagers. An adaptation of Jessica Goldman’s 2020 bestseller They Wish They Were Us, the show will primarily take place at an exclusive prep school on Long Island’s affluent Gold Coast. It concerns an elite secret society at the school known as “The Players”, which becomes the center of a murder mystery when one of its new members dies during an initiation ritual. It’s the mission of her best friend, the story’s narrator and leader of The Players, to uncover the truth behind her death. There are obvious questions to be asked about Sweeney’s involvement in the main cast of The Players Table, given that she’ll almost certainly be into her thirties when production of the series begins, and beyond the stage in her career when she can feasibly play a high-schooler. She’s already transitioned into more adult roles over the past five years, and the final season of Euphoria felt like her swansong in the coming-of-age genre. Nevertheless, during the last two years she has suggested The Players Table is very much aimed at people her age, when confirming to Collider that the project is still moving forward. “I think there's a lot of different themes and characters that will play into our generation,” Sweeney explained. We should expect her to be front-and-center of the series, one way or another. The Players Table Feels Like Gossip Girl Crossed With Veronica Mars Whatever Sydney Sweeney’s part in its cast, The Players Table will be highly reminiscent of another high-society drama aimed at young adults set in a wealthy part of New York. In tone, narrative voice, and characterization, Jessica Goldman’s novel They Wish They Were Us owes a debt of gratitude to Gossip Girl, and its TV adaptation will inevitably mirror the world of Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf. At the same time, the murder mystery, amateur detective, and adolescent noir elements of the story have been influenced by another noughties TV series. Veronica Mars changed the detective genre forever with its youthful female perspective, and The Players Table will undoubtedly incorporate the innovations of this 21st century classic into its storytelling approach. Scratch & Peek Identify the cover art while scratching off as little foil as possible. Combining Gossip Girl with Veronica Mars certainly sounds like a winning formula for Sydney Sweeney’s next small-screen project. Despite the sudden death of executive producer Jean-Marc Vallée in 2021 and lengthy Writers’ Guild of America strikes in 2023 casting serious doubts over the development of the series, The Players Table is moving closer to the start of production. Sweeney likely already has a gap in her schedule set aside to take part in filming it.
