She played Superman's adoptive mother, Martha Kent, in 2006's Superman Returns, which is led by Brandon Routh as the titular superhero. Other major roles in her career include Eve Kendall in the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock movie North by Northwest and Edie Doyle in 1954's On the Waterfront. For the latter, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and was the oldest living Oscar winner prior to her death. A representative for Saint shared with Deadline that she died of natural causes in her Los Angeles home on October 6, where she was surrounded by her family and other loved ones. Saint was born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey. While she had starred in several television movies and series prior to On the Waterfront, it was her feature film, making it all the more impressive that she won an Academy Award in her feature film debut. Elia Kazan directed the 1954 crime drama, while Marlon Brando played Terry Malloy. Saint's win for Best Supporting Actress is one of eight categories that the movie won an Oscar for, with others including Best Picture, Brando for Best Actor, and Kazan for Best Director. As Eve Kendall in North by Northwest, Saint's portrayal as the femme fatale is among some of the most memorable performances in Hitchcock's movies. 67 years later, the movie continues to be acclaimed, as per the "Certified Fresh" 97% critics' score and 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with Saint being an integral part of the iconic spy thriller's enduring legacy.
