It introduced us to the lovable dinosaur friend, Yoshi, and guided us through one of the best Super Mario platforming adventures of all time. Its innovative level designs and large world full of secrets have gone on to inspire game developers throughout the years since its release, and it's a title that is still played by many even 35 years later. Of course, during those 35 years, there have been many advancements in technology. Playing the original Super Mario World on the SNES isn't so easy to do these days, although it is available to play through Nintendo Switch Online. Despite the beloved status this game holds, there is no official Super Mario World remaster or remake from Nintendo, nor any announcement of one to come. However, talented fans in the gaming community have worked their magic in bringing the game to PC in a remastered format. Super Mario World Remastered is a fan-made remastered PC version of the classic game. Created by Super Buzzy Yoshi, the game features updated tilesets, custom background parallaxes, refined level layouts, updated HUD elements, and more while keeping the basic feel and mechanics of the game intact. The changes help to make the original 16-bit game look more visually appealing and run better on modern PCs. The funny thing about nostalgia and getting older is that looking at the trailer for Super Mario World Remastered, the game looks the way it is in my memory. However, Super Mario World Remastered actually has several technical changes in addition to refreshed graphics that are designed to make it feel recognizable and familiar. The entire game was released as a custom campaign inside the larger Super Mario Bros. X2 project, so it isn't your traditional PC port. In order to run the game, you will need to install SMBX2 Beta 5 Patch 4 and then run the remaster as a custom episode by dropping its folder into the platform's worlds directory. Super Mario Bros. X and X2 were created as a platforming engine and level editor, and provide a framework for fans to build on. In the case of Super Mario World Remastered, the main changes are essentially focused on practical concerns, including the graphics and performance. That isn't always the case in titles made inside SMBX2. Over the decades since Super Mario first debuted, there have been many attempts by fans to mod some of the older titles forward onto modern systems, particularly through PC ports. Because of the legality issues that can come up from using intellectual property, particularly those belonging to Nintendo, it can get tricky to make a mod or port be successful. Therefore, as always, Nintendo owns the copyrights to Super Mario World, and although this remaster is impressive, it is not an official release, and there is no guarantee of how long this remastered take on Super Mario World will be available.
