There simply aren't enough games like Pokémon out there, let alone ones that merge its iconic gameplay loop with that of the immensely successful Valheim. The familiar loop of Pokémon has managed to sustain an entire series for good reason, its myriad of fascinating creatures coupled with phenomenal region design proving to be an engrossing loop that one can't help but smile at when experiencing. It's the sense of discovery, of whimsy and wonder as you traverse tall grass on your bike, excitedly hoping to find that one elusive 'mon. Fortunately, a handful of indie developers have taken it upon themselves to deliver this loop in whole new contexts to keep things feeling fresh. From fusing it with horror tropes to survival RPGs, there is a slowly growing pantheon of amazing RPGs like Pokémon. The latest brings together the best parts of Pokémon, Valheim, and Studio Ghibli to deliver a sumptuously detailed, action-packed adventure that fans of Game Freak's legendary series will assuredly enjoy. Never Wither Is Pokémon Meets Valheim With A Touch Of Ghibli The pitch of Pokémon meets Valheim meets Studio Ghibli is a tantalizing one, and not something a game earns easily. Yet, that is precisely what Never Wither is ambitiously aiming for. Its vibrant natural environments, coupled with a perpetually cozy, warm glow and colorful creatures, evoke the same sense of whimsy as Ghibli's incredible library of films. Never Wither's unique approach to base building (temple building in this case) and resource gathering offers up that same engrossing loop as Valheim. In contrast, its more frenetic action offers something a tad more exciting for those who felt Valheim's combat was lacking. Most importantly, however, is Never Wither's collection of collectible creatures, monsters that can be freed of corruption and tamed for the player's defenseless little glowing blob to transform into them and take on fearsome bosses. Never Wither manages to balance these elements rather effortlessly, delivering a gameplay loop somewhat akin to Palworld, albeit without as much jank and blatant copyright infringement. Never Wither's action, resource management, and creature collecting all feel significantly more satisfying than most other survival games like Pokémon, which ultimately makes for a far better experience. You Can Play Never Wither For Free Now If Never Wither sounds even remotely appealing to you, then you're in luck, as you can play it completely for free right now. The game has a demo available via Steam as part of the ongoing Steam Next Fest that features around 5 hours of content from the full game that's set to launch at a currently undisclosed date in the future. The Never Wither demo features the first region, 19 unique creatures to collect, 4 bosses to fight, base building, multiple pieces of equipment to craft, and various abilities. It offers a good slice of the Pokémon and Valheim-esque elements players can expect to see when it eventually launches, and obviously showcases its stunning Ghibli-esque world and visuals. The demo is still a work in progress, but the developer, Geo Seed Games, is actively patching any problems players discover. It will be available through Steam Next Fest, but there's no confirmation that it'll stay once the event is over (Monday, 26 October). So, if you've been looking for a game like Valheim or a new Pokémon-like experience, then be sure to play it while you can. Never Wither absolutely has the potential to be something special, to be the next great survival crafting RPG if it manages to get the audience, or, at the very least, just a great Pokémon-like with a few twists to keep things feeling fresh.
