Admiral Reeger commandeers the USS Enterprise while Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is off-ship in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 8. Installing the visiting Lt. Commander Kirk as his First Officer, Reeger goes on the hunt for a mystery ship that massacred five million United Federation of Planets citizens, including Simon's wife and daughters. Reeger's prey is never seen or identified in "Orders of Magnitude," but the cloaked ship capable of large-scale destruction echoes the Romulan Bird-of-Prey in Star Trek: The Original Series season 1's "Balance of Terror." That Romulan marauder annihilated Federation outposts on the Neutral Zone before it was found and destroyed by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the Starship Enterprise. Strange New Worlds’ Mystery Ship Is The Romulan Enemy In Star Trek: The Original Series’ “Balance Of Terror” Appearing as a guest on Open Pike Night podcast (see above), Alan B. McElroy, writer of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 8, confirmed that Admiral Reeger's invisible adversary is the same Romulan Bird-of-Prey in Star Trek: The Original Series' "Balance of Terror." See Alan's quote below: Alan B. McElroy: "In truth, [Kirk] is wrong because this ship becomes the ship that he will end up having to confront in 'Balance of Terror'. So, in a sense, he let an enemy slip through his fingers that he would [have to face again]. That's why that line is so important. When Reeger at the end says, 'The blood and the terror will be on your head.' That was a direct link to 'Balance of Terror'." "Orders of Magnitude" takes place in 2262, four years before Captain Kirk takes on the Romulan Bird-of-Prey. Presumably, the same Romulan Commander (Mark Lenard) is leading the cloaked ship, which was identified as the Romulan flagship in "Balance of Terror." The Bird-of-Prey is the Romulans' ultimate weapon in his era, armed with a powerful plasma weapon that has the drawback of the ship needing to de-cloak before it can fire. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds now establishes that the Romulan Bird-of-Prey violated the Neutral Zone for four years before Captain Kirk destroyed it. The Romulans were secretly committing acts of war and killing millions of Federation citizens, including Reeger's family. All of this was being done by the Romulans to test the Federation's resolve. Admiral Reeger was stopped by Lt. Commander Kirk from executing Starfleet General Order 24 and destroying Argus II in an attempt to stop the cloaked enemy ship. At the end of "Orders of Magnitude," the unidentified vessel escaped. Captain Kirk is destined to face the Romulan Bird-of-Prey again, and ultimately stop it. Whether Captain Pike's USS Enterprise will get another crack at the Romulan ship in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5 (without learning it's the Romulans to preserve canon) remains to be seen. “Balance Of Terror” Plays A Massive Role In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds "Orders of Magnitude" is now the second time Star Trek: The Original Series' "Balance of Terror" has factored into Strange New Worlds, albeit subtly. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1's finale, "A Quality of Mercy," sent Captain Pike into an alternate-reality future where he led the USS Enterprise against the Romulan Bird-of-Prey instead of Captain Kirk. Unlike Kirk, Captain Pike's instincts were to seek a peaceful, diplomatic solution to the Romulans' aggression rather than destroy the Bird-of-Prey like Kirk did. While Pike earned the respect of the Bird-of-Prey's Romulan Commander (Matthew MacFadzean), pursuing peace confirmed the Federation's weakness to the Romulan Praetor (Carolyn Scott). Pike proved to be the wrong Captain of the Enterprise at this time, as he inadvertently sparked a forever war between the Romulans and the Federation that killed millions. In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' timeframe, the Federation does not yet know that Romulans are an offshoot of the Vulcan race. The Earth-Romulan war happened in the 22nd century without First Contact between the Federation and Romulan Star Empire. Having not heard from the Romulans for a century, Admiral Reeger, Lt. Commander Kirk, and Captain Pike have have no reason to suspect the mystery ship they pursued was a Romulan vessel. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' "Orders of Magnitude" is a secret set up for "Balance of Terror" and the first major confrontation between the Romulans and the Federation in the 23rd century.
