Steven Spielberg's First Western Movie Filming Window Revealed

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available. The Steven Spielberg Western is lassoing its filming window. Earlier this year, Spielberg confirmed he was making his first Western, sharing at SXSW that "I can’t reveal anything right now, but I have something in development. And it kicks ass. There will be horses. There will be guns. There will be no tropes, I can tell you that. There’s going to be no stereotypes." The untitled movie is a new genre for the legendary director and comes in the aftermath of his return to science fiction with Disclosure Day. In The Hollywood Reporter profile on cinematographer Janusz Kamiński, who won the publication's 2026 Visionary Award and is working with Spielberg on the Western, it was revealed that the movie is aiming to be shot in 2027. Kamiński also shared what he is envisioning for the movie's landscape, which is inspired by his childhood. Check out his comments below: We used to go to this region in the Sudeten Mountains, where it was just beautiful, rolling hills, looked like parts of Montana. The lay of the land, the snow on the ground, the fog. Those who shoot American movies tend to come from somewhere else, and we see these same things differently. That’s why there’s room in this profession for men and women from different countries who bring different aesthetics to American movies. With plans to begin filming in 2027, development appears to be progressing well, and the first cast members may be announced in the coming months. If the Western is anything like Disclosure Day, all official plot and character details, and even the movie's title, will remain under wraps throughout production, with secrecy helping to further build anticipation. Many of Spielberg's movies have been collaborations with Kamiński, beginning with Schindler's List and later followed by The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Artificial Intelligence, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, War of the Worlds, Munich, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crysal Skull, War Horse, Lincoln, Bridge of Spies, The BFG, West Side Story, The Fabelmans, and Disclosure Day. More to come...
