Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond. Stargate's larger influence on science fiction cannot be understated. While the franchise began with Roland Emmerich's 1994 film, it was MGM's sprawling television universe that transformed Stargate into a lasting genre institution. Stargate SG-1 became the centerpiece of the cult sensation, running for 10 seasons and building a passionate audience around its blend of military science fiction, ancient mythology, fascinating exploration of strange worlds, and of course, its signature style of humor that ensured the series never took itself too seriously. SG-1's success eventually paved the way for Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, expanding the mythology across new worlds, galaxies, and generations of characters. Together, those shows helped turn Stargate into one of television's most enduring science-fiction franchises, with a catalog that continues to attract longtime viewers and new fans alike. Now, that entire MGM television legacy is being brought back into the spotlight through Stargate: Enemy at the Gate, a must-experience adventure that serves as a broader celebration of the franchise's history. Stargate: Enemy At The Gate Spans 20 Years Of The Franchise's Lore Stargate: Enemy at the Gate is an ambitious total-conversion mod for 2006's Star Trek: Legacy that effectively swaps out Trek's familiar starships and technology for the vessels and weapons of MGM's Stargate universe. Created by NG|Mods (via ModDB), the project was developed over several years before its full version was finally released in 2011. Rather than concentrating on a single corner of the franchise, Enemy at the Gate was designed as a broader celebration of the MGM television era, sans Stargate Origins, of course, as that didn't come out until several years after the mod's release. Its scope is impressive, as by the time it arrived, Stargate had already spent roughly 14 years on television, stretching from the 1997 debut of Stargate SG-1 through Atlantis and the recently concluded Stargate Universe. The mod brings that history into Legacy's space-combat framework, with ships serving as the central attraction alongside franchise-specific technology and weapons. The developers specifically highlighted additions such as missiles and the Ancients' Drone weapons, with the latter adapted to function within Legacy's combat system. The project was also intended to replace an older Stargate conversion mod whose models the creator felt no longer matched Legacy's improved visuals, while incorporating portions of the franchise that previous mods had overlooked. The result is essentially a playable tour through the core spacefaring side of Stargate's classic television era. Stargate's Future Remains Uncertain Unfortunately, Stargate's future remains considerably less certain than its past. Amazon MGM Studios appeared ready to finally bring the franchise back in a major way when it greenlit a new television series from Stargate veteran Martin Gero in November 2025. The project was particularly exciting because it was intended to respect the existing television continuity while also providing a jumping-on point for new viewers. By 2026, a writers' room had been completed, casting had begun, production was preparing to film in London, and fans were absolutely hyped to see what the project's ambitious scope could deliver. Then, earlier this summer, Amazon abruptly decided not to move forward with the project in a devastating turn of events. Reports indicated executives were concerned Gero's version would not have enough appeal beyond Stargate's established fanbase, bringing yet another attempted revival to an early end before cameras even started rolling. That cancellation certainly doesn't bode well for the prospect of a straightforward modern revival, particularly one that continues the MGM television universe fans already know. There is at least some reason for optimism: as of September 2026, Amazon MGM is reportedly searching for another writer to tackle the property. However, there is currently no confirmed replacement series, and it remains unclear whether the next attempt would preserve the existing Stargate continuity or start over with a more comprehensive reboot.
