Kurt Sutter's widely popular motorcycle drama series, which aired on FX from 2008 to 2014, already launched one spinoff, Mayans M.C., centered on SAMCRO's titular rival biker gang. Now, over a decade after Sons of Anarchy ended, it's getting perhaps the most unique, meta sequel in television history with Legends. Developed by Jax Teller actor Charlie Hunnam and producer Jonathan Groff, Legends' official description is: "When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show." (via THR). Though Sutter is not involved (but gives his blessing), the sequel series will reunite Hunnam and much of the original Sons of Anarchy cast, including Katey Sagal (Gemma Teller Morrow), Ron Perlman (Clay Morrow), Maggie Siff (Tara Knowles), Mark Boone Junior (Bobby Munson), Kim Coates (Tig Traeger), Tommy Flanagan (Chibs Telford), and Theo Rossi (Juice Ortiz). It's a bold and risky premise, but if Legends is a success, it could change TV storytelling as we know it. Image via MovieStillsDB It's not uncommon for a show as successful as Sons of Anarchy to have multiple spinoffs. However, these are usually either series that center on supporting characters like Mayans M.C., prequels like Game of Thrones' House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, or both like Breaking Bad's Better Call Saul. This is because many of these dramas have a high body count by their series finales, making it impossible for most of the main cast to return as their original characters. However, Legends found a fun way to circumvent the problem of a mostly deceased SAMCRO. Most other meta spinoff shows have been comedies, such as Curb Your Enthusiasm and BH90210. These two series also demonstrate the range of success the niche genre has seen thus far, with the iconic Curb spanning 12 seasons over 24 years and BH90210 largely forgotten following its cancelation after just one season. If Legends flops, it could face a similar fate, but it already deserves credit for attempting something so new and daring. Image courtesy of MovieStillsDb On the other hand, if Legends is a hit, it could spark a wave of similar spinoffs from other prestige dramas — especially those with high casualties. The fan convention setting naturally lends itself to juggernaut sci-fi and fantasy series, and with a cast as sprawling as Game of Thrones', it's easy to imagine there'd be enough interested actors to make a series happen. Playing intense, morally grey TV antiheroes can take its toll, and a Legends-esque series could provide a way for stars to revisit their famous characters without gimmicky resurrection tactics. In 2018, Hunnam spoke to PEOPLE about what it was like saying goodbye to Jax Teller: "I had become that character, had become so deeply integrated into who I was, I literally didn’t realize until the day we wrapped and we put him to rest and I felt I went through a period of two or three weeks of, like, real bereavement." Hunnam went on to say that Jax became "sacred" to him, enough that he didn't want to "bring him back from the dead" for Mayans M.C. However, now the Sons of Anarchy star can explore the show's legacy in a way that honors both it and his character. Given the passion behind it, Legends very well may live up to its name.
