Son, 25, arrested after ‘hiding dead father’s body in wardrobe for 18 months in plot to continue drawing his pension’

After entering the property, officers found a corpse enmeshed in silicone sachets in an attempt to hide the scent of rotting flesh. The room was also sealed off with silicone to stop foul odors from escaping, police said. Officers arrested the son – who may face charges of concealing the whereabouts of a corpse and falsely claiming his father’s benefits. His father had died a year and a half ago, aged 71. Police knew to raid the home after the son rang a local newspaper and told them he had been “covering up” his father’s death “for a year and a half”. He did not say how his dad died, with an autopsy expected to revealthe cause of death in the next few days. The grim find has sent shockwaves through the small town, with one resident describing the discovery as “horrifying”. Neighbours remembered the father as an outgoing guy who regularly visited the local Patas bar. Sadly, locals told newspapers that he had not been seen for “a long time”. “People stopped seeing him, although his son was occasionally seen,” said one. The dad reportedly had dementia, but residents said they thought he and his son got on well. But one mentioned that the 25-year-old had been struggling for money — and was sometimes unable to afford cigarettes, telling the shopowner he would pay later. Stricken mayor of Torrecaballeros, Rubén García de Andrés said: “It is a situation that no one expects and is difficult to assimilate.” He has called for calm and respect in order to avoid hoaxes and misrepresentations. “In situations like this, the only thing we can do is more damage to third parties and interfere in the judicial investigation“, he said.
